{"id":274260,"date":"2025-11-09T23:54:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T23:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/274260\/"},"modified":"2025-11-09T23:54:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T23:54:15","slug":"cable-car-on-kunanyi-mount-wellington-included-in-draft-recommendations-right-to-information-documents-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/274260\/","title":{"rendered":"Cable car on Kunanyi\/Mount Wellington included in draft recommendations, Right to Information documents show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The managing authority for Hobart&#8217;s Kunanyi\/Mount Wellington has questioned why a draft plan for the mountain includes a recommendation for a cable car, documents released under Right to Information (RTI) laws show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Wellington Park Management Trust&#8217;s July minutes show the State Growth Department briefed the trust on a state government strategic review of management of the mountain and Wellington Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Trust members questioned why the cable car was included as a draft recommendation,&#8221; the minutes read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In response, the presenters advised that there was a recognised need for all-weather access and other methods of transport.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tasmanian Greens deputy leader Vica Bayley said the draft recommendations were &#8220;deeply disturbing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It wasn&#8217;t part of the consultation, a strong recommendation or theme that a cable car be built,&#8221;  Mr Bayley said.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-05-23\/tasmanian-government-kunanyi-mount-wellington-visitor-review\/103882824\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Transport review for Kunanyi\/Mt Wellington announced<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Hobart&#8217;s Kunanyi\/Mt Wellington attracts more than 400,000 visitors per year, most who drive up a winding road to reach its summit. A review of transport options and the park&#8217;s management will soon kick off \u2014 and will likely include talk of a cable-car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The latest cable car proposal was rejected by the Hobart City Council, nine votes to three, in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The proponent, the Mount Wellington Cableway Company, appealed against the council&#8217;s decision to the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (TASCAT), but the appeal failed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">TASCAT found the proposal did not meet standards around noise, visual impact and impacts on geo heritage and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Mount Wellington Cableway Company has since laid low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Bayley said the issue &#8220;should have been settled&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man speaks at a lectern\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/8fb18685a20d5db18f4fe17ecbfc8e7d\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Vica Bayley has described the draft recommendations as &#8220;deeply disturbing&#8221;. (Supplied: MWCC)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Responding to one of the recommendations, the trust said it did not support a focus on building visitation &#8220;over and above organic growth, before current visitation can be supported&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The purposes for which WP [Wellington Park] was set aside include to provide recreational and tourism uses and opportunities, but not to proactively grow visitation,&#8221; the trust wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There appears to be an overarching repositioning of Wellington Park as a commercial tourism product.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Actively building visitation (over and above organic growth) before current visitation can be safely accommodated is not supported.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mountain review reflects community split<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tasmanians have long been divided over the value of a cable car on Kunanyi\/Mount Wellington.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-06-21\/aboriginal-heritage-officers-lodge-submission-against-cable-car\/100230948\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aboriginal Heritage Officers lodge anti-cable car submission<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Aboriginal Heritage Officers have criticised\u00a0the Indigenous heritage assessment conducted by an interstate consultant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Since the first proposal in 1905, multiple plans have been put forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When the latest iteration was rejected by the Hobart City Council, 10,000 people viewed the live stream of the meeting, while the development proposal received 16,537 public submissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In May 2024, the then-responsible minister, Eric Abetz, announced a &#8220;strategic 12-month review&#8221; into the management of the mountain and the broader Wellington Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kunanyi\/Mount Wellington attracts more than 400,000 locals and tourists each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The review intended to assess how to improve land management, transport options, visitor infrastructure and cultural experiences on the site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Anti-cable car protesters dressed in red spell out No Cable Car in the foothills of kunanyi\/Mount Wellington\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/086c7035e4f4b856b7a875de402bd3cd\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Cable car proposals have divided the community. (Supplied: Rob Blakers)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In more than 9,000 public submissions to the review, support for and against a cable car featured heavily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">30 per cent specifically mentioned their support for one, while 28 per cent mentioned their opposition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">When the government&#8217;s review was announced, some local residents feared it would reignite plans for a cable car.
