{"id":274345,"date":"2025-11-10T00:48:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T00:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/274345\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T00:48:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T00:48:08","slug":"slim-pickings-what-explains-the-unusual-apple-shortage-in-this-blue-mountains-orchard-farming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/274345\/","title":{"rendered":"Slim pickings: what explains the unusual apple shortage in this Blue Mountains orchard? | Farming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">At this time of year, Pine Crest Orchard in the Blue Mountains town of Bilpin would usually have about 1,000 visitors a day picking their own fruit from trees laden with apples.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">But this season, the trees are mostly bare \u2013 and no one really knows why.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Orchardist John Galbraith, who owns and runs the farm with his wife, Erica, said he and the other local growers in Bilpin have been left scratching their heads about why, despite heavy flowering in spring, no fruit has formed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe had what looked like good blossom but then watching the trees over the second week of October I started to realise the flowers had fallen off and there were no apples,\u201d Galbraith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cInstead of the petals falling off and leaving the centre of the flower (which becomes the apple), the whole flowers and stalk had fallen off and you could walk up and down the rows and couldn\u2019t find any apples, which should be at that stage the size of a pea,\u201d Galbraith said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">About 60% of the family-run orchard is made up of apple trees, so the financial impact for the Galbraiths will be severe.<\/p>\n<p>Pine Crest Orchard is run by Jo Gubbins (left), and her parents, John and Erica Galbraith. Photograph: Pine Crest Orchard<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Pine Crest is not the only orchard in the area to be affected by the unusual shortage of apples and it\u2019s having a knock-on effect for tourism in the area, with day-trippers staying at home rather than spending money at pick-your-own farms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Greater Sydney Local Land Services held a workshop with growers and experts at Bilpin in late October to try to get to the bottom of the mystery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A few possible causes were discussed including the weather \u2013 it was quite windy at the time, which could have caused bees to be ineffective in pollinating the crops \u2013 and varroa mite, which was first detected in Australia in June 2022 and has spread rapidly, affecting bee populations across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Varroa mite has \u201ccaused a significant amount of wild bee hives to be destroyed, so there\u2019s a lack of the wild European honeybees,\u201d a Local Land Services spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>A lone apple on a tree that should be full of apples.
