{"id":274669,"date":"2025-11-10T04:21:16","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T04:21:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/274669\/"},"modified":"2025-11-10T04:21:16","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T04:21:16","slug":"mark-parton-elected-as-canberra-liberals-leader-as-leanne-castley-steps-down-jeremy-hanson-resigns-as-deputy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/274669\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark Parton elected as Canberra Liberals leader as Leanne Castley steps down, Jeremy Hanson resigns as deputy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">There&#8217;s been a complete shake-up in the leadership of the Canberra Liberals, with Mark Parton elected the new leader after Leanne Castley stepped down earlier this morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Deputy leader Jeremy Hanson also stepped down from his position, and Deborah Morris has been appointed the new deputy leader.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Parton was first elected to the ACT Legislative Assembly in 2016, and has served as the speaker for the last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He received the second-highest personal vote of any MLA at the 2024 election, only being outdone by Chief Minister Andrew Barr.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a press conference outside the assembly, Mr Parton said he was &#8220;absolutely sick to death of having conversations about internal party matters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I can tell you people out in the suburbs are not having those conversations,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And so I am here, along with Deborah Morris, to get nine parliamentary members on the same train, heading forward so that we can take on the government in 2028.&#8221;&#8216;It&#8217;s time to leave shit behind&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Parton said that in the past, his party had been divided by a line separating the left and the right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But I think in recent months my party&#8217;s been divided by a line that separates people who hang on to shit and people who leave shit behind,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It is time to leave shit behind, and that&#8217;s why I&#8217;m here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m here to provide an alternative to the people of Canberra, because God knows they need it, and given the unanimous support in party room for [myself and Ms Morris], I&#8217;m supremely confident we can do that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A blonde woman with a tartan jumper. \" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/cfa83e171cebe597f0206019ed41e814\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Deborah Morris has been named the Canberra Liberals deputy leader. (ABC News: Harry Frost)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Deborah Morris said she was humbled to be unanimously elected as the party&#8217;s deputy leader, and took the task of defeating the Labor government at the next election very seriously.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have a moral obligation to ensure that a viable Liberal alternative will take government in the next election,&#8221; deputy leader.\u00a0 (ABC News: Adam Kennedy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Castley is the ACT&#8217;s second-shortest serving opposition leader \u2014 something Acting Chief Minister Yvette Berry was quick to point out in a statement in response to the leadership changes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Taking down their leadership team after just 12 months is yet another example of how entrenched the divisions are within the party,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;While the Liberals are focussing on themselves, we\u00a0will continue to work on our progressive,\u00a0long-term vision for our city.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Months of tension within the party<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Tensions have been simmering within the Canberra Liberals for months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In September, it was revealed that <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-10\/canberra-liberals-backbenchers-cut-party-room-decision-making\/105754178\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105754178\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ms Lee and Mr Cain had been shut out of decision-making<\/a>, when a new set of principles was adopted restricting key discussions about policy and strategy to frontbenchers.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lee and Cain\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/afa84ffcd97128cd8fd7430d860b639c\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In October, Elizabeth Lee and Peter Cain crossed the floor during a vote about next year&#8217;s sitting weeks.
