Former driver and Sky Sports expert Martin Brundle has changed his tune on the penalty given to Oscar Piastri in Brazil<\/a>, declaring it was \u201cvery harsh\u201d despite initially saying it was a \u201cfair cop\u201d.<\/p>\n

Brundle was one of the only experts on Monday to defend the decision to hand Piastri a 10-second penalty for causing a three-car collision that ultimately ended the race of Charles Leclerc. <\/p>\n

It also saw the McLaren driver finish the race in fifth \u2014 and he heads to the next race in Las Vegas with a 24-point deficit to Lando Norris in the title race. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the standard penalty,\u201d Brundle said of the hefty punishment initially. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere were no mitigating circumstances, so I\u2019m not surprised.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe had to have a go, there\u2019s no doubt about that, but the penalty is a fair cop.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the day after the race in his column for Sky Sports<\/a>, Brundle said that he felt Piastri was harshly dealt with given how the crash looked, rather than the actual facts. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem for Oscar is that the initial optics didn\u2019t look at all good in that he\u2019d locked up, hit (Kimi) Antonelli\u2019s rear axle with his front, skittled two cars including one into instant retirement, and gained two places,\u201d Brundle wrote.<\/p>\n

Of the penalty, however, he said that after further review, it \u201cwas very harsh\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a clear mitigating circumstance that he was squeezed by the Mercedes, and that this action contributed to his lock up and contact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Brundle said that Piastri had to receive some form of punishment given, if he wasn\u2019t punished, it would\u2019ve suggested that Antonelli was wholly to blame.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been easy to justify reducing that to a five-second penalty – as Oscar said, \u2018I can\u2019t just disappear\u2019,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsidering it as a typical racing incident would be marginal. No penalty at all, and therefore by default wholly blaming Antonelli, not realistic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ruling on the incident, however, left Piastri wholly to blame \u2014 something which has drawn widespread criticism, including from Leclerc himself. <\/p>\n

\u201cOscar was optimistic but Kimi knew he was on the inside I think, and he kind of did the corner like Oscar was never there,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, the blame isn\u2019t all on Oscar even if he was optimistic, it could\u2019ve been avoided.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rumbling around the decision continued to linger on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

The Race\u2019s <\/a>Ben Anderson said it was simply a \u201cracing incident\u201d, echoing Brundle\u2019s call that the lockup played a decisive role in the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cPiastri\u2019s penalty I feel was a bit harsh, as there were three cars in the mix there, so you can\u2019t say it was a pure loss of control from Piastri that created the contact with Antonelli,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the stewards have probably used the brake lock to blame Piastri, but I don\u2019t think that accident happens that way without Leclerc there too, because Antonelli would have been able to give the McLaren more space.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, his colleague Scott Mitchell-Malm argued that Piastri\u2019s penalty should be the \u201clast straw\u201d for F1\u2019s \u201cflawed\u201d racing guidelines. <\/p>\n

As explained by foxsports.com.au after the race, stewards make decisions on incidents informed by set \u2018guidelines\u2019, which are not \u2018regulations\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mitchell-Malm wrote that the guidelines are being treated as \u201cdefinitive\u201d rather than as they were intended. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe guidelines say that the car on the inside doesn\u2019t need to be left space if they do not hold their front wheel at least level with the wing mirror of the car they are trying to overtake. So Piastri has, in essence, been punished for not barrelling in more, probably clobbering Antonelli in the process and taking out Leclerc anyway, just to claim a specific bit of track position by the apex,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n
