{"id":277450,"date":"2025-11-11T10:45:18","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T10:45:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/277450\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T10:45:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T10:45:18","slug":"nrl-2025-australian-wheelaroos-pair-bayley-mckenna-and-zac-schumacher-in-contention-for-2025-irl-wheelchair-golden-boot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/277450\/","title":{"rendered":"NRL 2025: Australian Wheelaroos pair Bayley McKenna and Zac Schumacher in contention for 2025 IRL Wheelchair Golden Boot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wheelaroos pair Bayley McKenna and Zac Schumacher are in contention to become Australia&#8217;s first Wheelchair Golden Boot winners after being chosen as contenders for the 2025 award.<\/p>\n<p>McKenna and Schumacher starred for the Wheelaroos in the recent Wheelchair Ashes Series against England on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p>England, the defending World Cup champions, retained the Ashes after coming from behind the win both matches of the series, triumphing 56-28 and 48-42 after a last-minute Joe Coyd try.<\/p>\n<p>McKenna was named player-of-the-match in the second Ashes clash after scoring 22 points through two tries and seven conversions without miss, while Schumacher was Australia\u2019s best in the series opener. Round 2, 2025<\/p>\n<p>Ireland have been recognised for their triumph in the Celtic Cup against Wales and Scotland, with the nominations of Joseph Calcott and Peter Johnston.<\/p>\n<p>After winning the Celtic Cup in 2024, Ireland triumphed 66-10 against Wales and 92-20 against Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Calcott scored nine tries and landed five goals for a personal haul of 46 points in the tournament, while Johnston scored 40 points from four tries and 12 goals.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland also beat Scotland 58-6 in October, with Johnston scoring another 24 points from four tries and four goals, while Calcott also crossed for a try.<\/p>\n<p>The IRL Golden Boot is awarded to the best player in sanctioned rugby league international matches each year.<\/p>\n<p>The Wheelchair 2025 IRL Golden Boot is chosen by a judging panel which comprises:<\/p>\n<p>Malcolm Kielty MBE: A pioneer of Wheelchair Rugby League and one of the founders of the game.<br \/>\nMartin Meredith OAM: Former Wheelchair Rugby League Australia Chair, ex-Manly Sea Eagles player and Halifax Challenge Cup winner.<br \/>\nNiel Wood:\u00a0IRL Wheelchair Rugby League Advisory Group (WRLAG) Chair<br \/>David Butler: IRL Wheelchair Rugby League Advisory Group Secretary;
