The West Aussie<\/a> coastal town of Cervantes has found itself in the spotlight after an Aussie<\/a> drew attention to a \u201cfascinating\u201d detail about the secluded spot.<\/p>\n

While the hit holiday destination is known as the gateway to the Pinnacles Desert in Nambung Park and renowned for its crayfish industry and pristine beaches, it has instead become a topic of discussion because of its Spanish name.<\/p>\n

Corey, who\u2019s online videos centre around Spanish language and culture, pointed out the detail in a TikTok clip that has gained 1.6 million views.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if every Spanish person knows this about Australia, but I am Australian and did not know this,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is a town in the very isolated region of Western Australia called Cervantes, and there\u2019s something interesting going on in Cervantes if you\u2019re interested in anything to do with Spain.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then hovers over Google Maps and zooms into the small town located about 197kms north of Perth<\/a> to reveal the names of the streets.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo if you hop on over to Perth in Western Australia, and you go a little bit to the north you will find the sleepy town of Cervantes,\u201d Corey continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe funny thing about this place is that almost every single street is named after somewhere in Spain. Malaga Court, Valencia Road, Tarragona Loo, Almeria Street, and Andalucia Street.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho is living here? It\u2019s just like a random Spanish enclave in bumf..k nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Spanish theme Corey stumbled across can be explained with a look back at the town\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

It was named after an American whaling ship, The Cervantes, which wrecked off the coast in 1844, according to Tourism Western Australia.<\/p>\n

The vessel itself was named after Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes, who is best known for his two-part novel Don Quixote.<\/p>\n

The ship and it\u2019s Spanish link set the tone for the rest of the town, with the park and street names also inspired by Spain.<\/p>\n

West Aussies and people who have visited Cervantes jumped to the comments section to take a jab at the way Sandgropers butcher the pronunciation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhats funny is the way West Aussies pronounce the town of Cervantes,\u201d one person commented.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeen there and no-one pronounces the streets like that lmaoo,\u201d another added.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s about an hour or so from me and none of it is pronounced the Spanish way. And it\u2019s Sir Van T\u2019s,\u201d said a third.<\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t realise that.
