On \u201cstandard\u201d British roads &#8211; relics of Victorian 12-foot width standardisation \u2013 the necessary 1.5 metres needed to safely pass a cyclist is not possible.<\/p>\n<p>Under new guidance from the active travel body for England (outlined in a 16 point document titled, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/critical-safety-issues-for-walking-wheeling-and-cycling\/critical-safety-issues-for-walking-wheeling-and-cycling\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/critical-safety-issues-for-walking-wheeling-and-cycling\/critical-safety-issues-for-walking-wheeling-and-cycling\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u2018Critical Safety Issues for Walking, Wheeling and Cycling<\/a>\u2019) roads should be narrowed to force drivers to move lanes in order to overtake cyclists, or widened to enable<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/i-was-overtaken-so-badly-by-a-lorry-driver-at-the-weekend-that-i-feared-the-worst-and-this-is-just-normal-for-a-cyclist\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/i-was-overtaken-so-badly-by-a-lorry-driver-at-the-weekend-that-i-feared-the-worst-and-this-is-just-normal-for-a-cyclist\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> safe overtakes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"9687e85e-4347-4ade-9362-826fc0c05811-2\">\u201cCollisions from alongside are one of the most frequent types of collision for cyclists and are more likely where lane widths encourage close passing,\u201d reads a statement from ATE. \u201cThe risk is reduced when lanes are 3.9m or wider, while lanes narrower than 3.25m are usually narrow enough to discourage drivers from attempting to overtake a cyclist when it is unsafe to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You may like<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">New research from the University College London into <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/cyclists-experience-more-near-misses-at-rush-hour-study-of-317-hours-of-commuting-shows\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.cyclingweekly.com\/news\/cyclists-experience-more-near-misses-at-rush-hour-study-of-317-hours-of-commuting-shows\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;near misses&#8221; on London&#8217;s roads<\/a>, published this month, showed that the most commonly reported near misses were close overtakes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d753a946-fe63-4193-84f2-d8cb301ae5d7\">Narrower roads leave more room for pedestrians, too \u2013 on King William Street in London, road lanes are currently being narrowed to below 3.25m to create space for new trees and seating. This \u00a33.3 million project is a precursor to a \u00a343 billion road building programme across England set to implement ATE\u2019s guidance.<\/p>\n<p>The case to widen roads seems strong, too.
