Novak Djokovic<\/a>, in a high-profile interview with Piers Morgan released on YouTube on Tuesday<\/a>, delivered a scathing critique of how the doping case involving Jannik Sinner<\/a> \u2013 who received a three-month ban<\/a> in February \u2013 was managed. In what is regarded as his most extensive public commentary on the issue, Djokovic pointed to a severe \u201clack of transparency\u201d and \u201cinconsistency\u201d in the disciplinary process.<\/p>\n

The current world No.4, who has chosen not to play<\/a> the Turin ATP Finals where Sinner is competing<\/a>, emphasized that while he believes Sinner\u2019s innocence regarding intent, the player must ultimately be held \u201cresponsible\u201d. Djokovic stated the entire case was marked by \u201cso many red flags\u201d and called the handling \u201cvery, very odd,\u201d suggesting that Sinner, as a high-profile athlete, received favorable treatment.<\/p>\n

The Serbian star drew a direct contrast between Sinner\u2019s outcome and that of less prominent players, arguing the rules were not applied equally. \u201cWhen you see someone for something very similar or same being banned for years, and then he\u2019s banned for provisional, whatever, three months or whatever it was, it\u2019s just it\u2019s not right,\u201d Djokovic asserted, not naming any case.<\/p>\n

Jannik Sinner tested positive for traces of clostebol in March 2024. The ITIA\u2019s independent tribunal initially cleared him of fault, recognizing that the contamination occurred unknowingly via his physiotherapist. However, WADA appealed this decision, affirming that under anti-doping rules, athletes are ultimately responsible for their entourage\u2019s actions. To avoid prolonged litigation, Sinner agreed to a three-month suspension beginning in February 2025. The case resolution acknowledged his lack of intent and competitive advantage, while emphasizing strict liability for team negligence.<\/p>\n

Djokovic specifically questioned the timing of the punishment, noting the suspension appeared to be calculated for \u201cconvenience\u201d by coming \u201cbetween the Slams (The Australian Open and Roland-Garros) so he doesn\u2019t miss out the others.\u201d Djokovic\u2019s claim was reinforced by his observation that numerous other players, both male and female, had previously voiced similar complaints in the media regarding the preferential treatment afforded to elite players in such situations.<\/p>\n

Despite his sharp criticism of the governing bodies, whose names he doesn\u2019t mention (the ITIA and the WADA were mainly involved thus the control happened on an ATP competition), Djokovic maintained that Sinner\u2019s accountability remains non-negotiable. While Djokovic \u2013 who was Sinner\u2019s training partner when the Italian was a junior at Ricardo Piatti\u2019s academy \u2013 expressed that he was \u201cshocked\u201d by the incident and believes Sinner \u201cdidn\u2019t do it on purpose,\u201d he insisted that the rules mandate personal responsability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to believe, and knowing my history with him, I think he didn\u2019t do it on purpose. But of course, he is responsible because those are the rules. You are responsible when something like this happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

Djokovic also offered empathy for Sinner\u2019s ongoing situation, acknowledging the difficulty of navigating a public controversy. He praised Sinner for handling the continuous media scrutiny \u201cvery well and very maturely,\u201d noting the Italian\u2019s ability to win big titles, including Wimbledon this year, despite the distractions.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, Djokovic predicted that the controversy will have a lasting impact on the World No. 1\u2019s legacy. Djokovic is the co-founder of the PTPA, the Professional Tennis Player\u2019s Association, whose statement on the Sinner\u2019s case is close to the Serbe\u2019 latest comments.
