Three Liberal politicians have been delayed getting to Canberra for climate talks after a Qantas plane was forced to make an urgent landing at Adelaide Airport when crews noticed smoke in the cabin.<\/p>\n
A Qantas spokesperson said the QF1972 flight heading to Canberra, which was an E190 aircraft, turned around shortly after it departed about 6:10am on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
A Liberal Party spokesperson told ABC News Breakfast South Australian MP Tony Pasin and senators Leah Blyth and Andrew McLachlan were on the plane.<\/p>\n
Ms Blyth said she noticed smoke in the cabin shortly after take-off.<\/p>\n
“Upon take-off there was a smell of smoke in the cabin and there was light, white smoke that filled the cabin,” she said.<\/p>\n
“It was an unexpected start to the morning with one of the shortest flights I’ve ever had.”<\/p>\n

She said the crew was “calm and collected” and all passengers disembarked calmly.<\/p>\n
“[I am] very grateful to the Qantas crew for keeping us informed and getting us safely back on the ground,” Ms Blyth said.<\/p>\n
Mr Pasin told ABC South East SA he noticed a “strange smell” before the plane was forced to turn back.<\/p>\n
“There was a landing and we were followed into the bay by fire officers,” he said.<\/p>\n
“The incident was incredibly professionally handled by airport staff and Qantas crew.”<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Qantas spokesperson said the captain declared a PAN \u2014 an urgent signal and requested a priority landing when smoke was in the flight deck.<\/p>\n
“One of our Adelaide to Canberra flights returned to Adelaide shortly after take-off this morning, after reporting a technical issue,” they said.<\/p>\n
“The aircraft landed safely this morning and our engineers will be checking the aircraft today.<\/p>\n
“Our pilots are highly trained to handle situations like this and the aircraft landed safely after the appropriate procedures were conducted. “<\/p>\n
