{"id":278916,"date":"2025-11-12T02:20:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T02:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/278916\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T02:20:15","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T02:20:15","slug":"good-chance-of-aurora-tonight-as-two-year-peak-solar-activity-nears-its-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/278916\/","title":{"rendered":"Good chance of aurora tonight, as two-year peak solar activity nears its end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">One of nature&#8217;s most magnificent shows, the southern lights, could be on display for large parts of southern Australia tonight as high as Perth and Sydney, with a severe solar storm having an impact on Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It comes as the Sun&#8217;s magnetic cycle nears the end of its most active phase \u2014 a period which has been helping trigger a boom of aurora activity of the past two years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Known as the aurora australis, the colourful curtains of light are the result of geomagnetic storms, which disrupt Earth&#8217;s magnetic field.<\/p>\n<p>Aurora photographers &#8216;take the day off&#8217; as large storm looms<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sws.bom.gov.au\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Bureau of Meteorology&#8217;s space weather forecasting centre has issued an &#8220;aurora watch&#8221;<\/a>, with severe geomagnetic storm conditions forecast to arrive at Earth from today, peaking at G4 levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Strong geomagnetic storm conditions are expected to continue on Thursday, before declining over Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Matt Woods, from the Perth Observatory, said a storm of that magnitude meant there was a &#8220;good chance&#8221; that bright auroras could be visible across large parts of southern Australia once the skies darkened.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This could potentially reach as far north as Sydney and Perth, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=1287254356777642&amp;set=pb.100064792685792.-2207520000\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to BOM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Purple and yellow colours in a night sky, mixed with patchy cloud.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/c192f6d7b6831cd5413f40398f4ff2be\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Many captured the aurora over Tasmania in November 2025, despite expectations the event would be weak. The further south you are, the more colour you get.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">However, the full scope of colour, including the iconic greens, is best captured on camera with a long exposure of about 10 to 15 seconds, according to Mr Woods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Typical aurora events last from 15 to 30 minutes, though some can be much shorter or last for several hours, with some displays lasting for just a few minutes before disappearing and reappearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What is an aurora?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Auroras are triggered by the remnants of a sudden sun explosion, known as a coronal mass ejection (CME).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">During these events, particles, energy and material are blasted into the solar system, causing geomagnetic storms that can disrupt Earth&#8217;s magnetic field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Three CMEs observed over recent days are considered to be en route to Earth, according to BOM.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Telescope image of the sun, in blue hues, showing solar flares in white.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/92ea1f72fba2a378e59e529cbfa4275c\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">On November 11, the Sun unleashed a major solar flare, the most intense since October 2024. (Supplied: Luke Rasmussen\/Bruny Island Aurora Photography)<\/p>\n<p>Technology disruptions<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Geomagnetic storms, while pretty, can can cause massive outages to technology such as radio blackouts, power outages and issues for satellites.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This is why they come as a warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In February 2022, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-02-10\/solar-storm-knocks-out-40-newly-launched-spacex-satellites\/100818798\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/100818798\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">about 40 just-launched Starlink satellites fell victim to a powerful solar storm<\/a> and were knocked back into the atmosphere, where they burned up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">BOM space weather forecaster Tom Grace said the role of the space forecasting centre was to warn of these events.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The interesting thing about space weather is with enough \u2026 forewarning you can \u2026 avoid impacts because they&#8217;re all based around technological systems,&#8221; Dr Grace said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Satellite operators can turn satellites off or put them in safe mode, or the energy grid can be prepared to deal with surges in certain power lines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A two-year aurora boom<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">For the past two years, we have been in the midst of an explosion of aurora activity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Not only have aurora events been more frequent, they have been visible from places much further north than normal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Pinks and greens dance across the sky, reflecting off the water in Victoria.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/53b42af3edaff98b6b28a6609fb5a4e1\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Luke Rasmussen says the past two years have been &#8220;amazing&#8221; for capturing auroras. (Supplied: Luke Rasmussen)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This is because we have been in a period known as &#8220;solar maximum&#8221; \u2014 the period of the Sun&#8217;s 11-year cycle when solar activity is highest and sunspots are most abundant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Generally, the more sunspot activity there is, the higher the chance of an aurora occurring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This has certainly been the case of the past two years in Australia, according to Bruny Island astro photographer Luke Rasmussen, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/gippslandaurora\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">who specialises in aurora photography<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The peak of this cycle has exceeded expectations. So we&#8217;ve been in a very lucky period,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Almost every week or so there&#8217;s something going on, and every few weeks there&#8217;s something bigger, and every four months we&#8217;ve had some amazing displays.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The light shows have also been seen well outside of the southernmost regions, where they are usually limited to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">During some of the big displays of the past few years, auroras have been seen as far north as Geraldton in Western Australia and Tamworth in New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The most notable event was in May 2024, when a G5 storm hit Earth. It was the biggest geomagnetic storm we had seen in 20 years, <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/science-research\/heliophysics\/what-nasa-is-learning-from-the-biggest-geomagnetic-storm-in-20-years\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aurora boom will not last forever<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Solar maximum was officially reached in October 2024, according to NASA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Dr Grace said while it had been &#8220;quieter&#8221; until recently, we were still in a period of high activity \u2014 for now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I would say we&#8217;re still in a maximum period. We could see another peak in this cycle, or we might not. But we&#8217;re definitely still in a period of high activity,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">This will not last forever, though. (Supplied: Darren Boaden via <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2 Link_underlineOnHover__Wg_BQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/WeatherObsessed\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Weather Obsessed<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Solar minimum \u2014 the period of the Sun&#8217;s cycle where there is &#8220;almost a complete absence of sunspots&#8221; \u2014 is expected to occur in late 2030.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Between now and then you&#8217;d expect overall there will be a decrease in activity,&#8221;  Dr Grace said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But that does not mean there will not be more opportunities to catch the lights \u2014 especially in the next year or so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some of the biggest space weather events that have impacted on Earth have occurred on the way out of solar maximum, according to Dr Grace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It is for this reason Luke Rasmussen is still enthusiastic that he will catch more auroras on camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s exciting because the next few years could still really be fantastic,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While there may be a lull after that, it will not be forever.
