More than 1000 players have been suspended by the Turkish Football<\/a> Federation in a widening betting scandal<\/a>, including national team defender Eren Elmali who has been a Champions League regular for Galatasaray this season.<\/p>\n

Elmali published a statement to explain his involvement in the case after he was pulled from the Turkey squad preparing to play World Cup qualifying games against Spain and Bulgaria.<\/p>\n

The 25-year-old Elmali posted on Instagram that he bet on a game about five years ago that did not involve his own team. He joined Galatasaray this year.<\/p>\n

Elmali and his Galatasaray teammate Metehan Baltaci are among 1024 players on a list published by the Turkish federation who have been referred to a disciplinary commission.<\/p>\n

The federation said third- and fourth-tier divisions are shut down for two weeks, but games in the Super League \u2014 led by defending champion Galatasaray \u2014 and second tier will continue.<\/p>\n

Turkish football has been rocked by investigations into alleged widespread betting by referees, and now players, on games which is prohibited by FIFA.<\/p>\n

More than 150 referees are alleged to have bet on games<\/a>, including seven who are approved to handle top-level games and 15 top-level assistants.<\/p>\n

The president of top-tier club Eyupspor and the former owner of Kas\u0131mpasa have been implicated and questioned.<\/p>\n

Football’s new home, Stan Sport<\/a>, is the only place to watch the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, WSL, European World Cup qualifiers, J.League, NSWL and K League<\/p>\n

\u201cOur duty is to elevate Turkish football to its rightful place and to purge it of all its filth,\u201d federation president \u0130brahim Hac\u0131osmano\u011flu said at a news conference two weeks ago.<\/p>\n

Turkish football has enjoyed a revival in recent years.<\/p>\n
