{"id":279700,"date":"2025-11-12T13:51:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-12T13:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/279700\/"},"modified":"2025-11-12T13:51:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-12T13:51:08","slug":"nrl-club-snap-up-rugby-league-icons-nephew-ahead-of-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/279700\/","title":{"rendered":"NRL club snap up rugby league icon&#8217;s nephew ahead of 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Penrith Panthers have swooped to sign young gun Patrick Moi Moi, the nephew of rugby league icon Fuifui, ahead of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Now 46, uncle Fuifui achieved cult hero status on both sides of the globe during his 19-season playing career.<\/p>\n<p>After racking up over 200 first-grade appearances for Parramatta, and scoring a try in the Eels\u2019 narrow 2009 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/nrl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NRL<\/a> Grand Final defeat to Melbourne Storm, the legendary prop moved into the British game with Leigh in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Going on to don a shirt for Toronto Wolfpack, Workington Town and Rochdale Hornets, the forward never featured in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/super-league\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Super League<\/a> but shone in both the Championship and League 1 as he racked up more than 140 games across all competitions.<\/p>\n<p>Representing both Tonga and New Zealand on the international stage, with the latter through his heritage, the Nuku\u2019alofa-born powerhouse\u2019s overall career appearance tally sits above the 360-mark.<\/p>\n<p>Towards the back end of his career, which ended in 2022, he also had short stints in union with community clubs Bradford &amp; Bingley RFC and York RUFC.<\/p>\n<p>NRL club set to sign rugby league icon\u2019s nephew following silverware-laden campaign<\/p>\n<p>Nephew Patrick is at the very start of his career, and though Penrith are yet to officially announce his arrival, numerous sources Down Under \u2013 including <a rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nine.com.au\/sport\/nrl\/news-2025-the-mole-exclusive-column-eliesa-katoa-tonga-medical-history-jason-taumalolo-injury-20251111-p5neq0.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Mole via Nine<\/a> \u2013 have confirmed it is a done deal.<\/p>\n<p>Primarily a centre, he will join the Panthers on the back of a 2025 campaign which saw him impress for the New Zealand Warriors\u2019 reserves as they reigned supreme in the New South Wales Cup.<\/p>\n<p>The Wahs\u2019 second string topped the NSW Cup ladder at the end of the \u2018regular\u2019 season and then went on to beat St George Illawarra Dragons\u2019 reserves in the Grand Final.<\/p>\n<p>They also hammered Queensland Cup champions Burleigh Bears 50-20 in October\u2019s State Championship final to claim the ultimate crown at second-grade level Down Under.<\/p>\n<p>21-year-old Moimoi \u2013 who began the year in the Jersey Flegg Cup before working his way up \u2013 did not feature in that State Championship clash, but will arrive at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loverugbyleague.com\/tag\/penrith\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Penrith<\/a> having gone up against an NRL outfit during a 2024 pre-season clash.<\/p>\n<p>He came off the bench for the Wahs against Wests Tigers in that pre-season game, though still awaits an official NRL debut.<\/p>\n<p>If reports Down Under are correct, Moimoi will make the move to the Panthers alongside team-mates Kalani Going, Toby Crosby and Tom Ale, who all formed part of the Warriors\u2019 second-grade champion squad this term.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Penrith Panthers have swooped to sign young gun Patrick Moi Moi, the nephew of rugby league icon Fuifui,&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":279701,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[567],"tags":[64,63,760,85],"class_list":{"0":"post-279700","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-rugby","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-rugby","11":"tag-sports"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/279700","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=279700"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/279700\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/279701"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=279700"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=279700"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=279700"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
