As the iconic comedy enters its 18th year this July, Modi says that staying relevant in an evolving entertainment landscape is both a challenge and a responsibility.\u201cTelevision is still successful, but there\u2019s a lot of competition today. With social media and OTT platforms, people have many options for entertainment. We constantly have to think of new ideas to keep the audience engaged,\u201d says Modi. \u201cFor 17 years, we\u2019ve managed to do that without taking a single leap. ‘A daily comedy was needed when Kyunki was ruling the charts’Modi recalls how the idea for Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah took shape when he wanted to create India\u2019s first daily comedy. \u201cWhen Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was ruling television, I felt that a daily comedy was important. People laughed at the idea back then,\u201d rest became history,” he shares. \u201cThe Taarak Mehta column had humor and characters but no fixed story. I took inspiration from it, added my own storytelling, and built a show around those characters.\u201dOver the years, TMKOC has evolved into one of Indian television\u2019s most loved family shows, portraying the everyday lives of Gokuldham Society\u2019s residents. \u201cThe show is about society and people\u2019s relationships \u2014 not about any one actor. It\u2019s an ensemble show that celebrates community living,\u201d he explains. \u201cWhen actors quit, I feel bad, but I have to keep the story entertaining. The audience loves the show and expects new episodes every day.\u201d’Actors quit Taarak but I have believed that show must go on’The show has faced its share of controversies and cast exits, but Modi maintains that he focuses on positivity and discipline. \u201cActors have worked for years and given their best. I\u2019ve never asked anyone to leave. But sometimes when people move on, they say things they shouldn\u2019t,\u201d he says. \u201cMany of them have later requested to return \u2014 and some have rejoined. The show must go on. Rules and discipline are important in any professional setup.\u201dHe dismisses rumors about unusual clauses in actors\u2019 contracts\u201cPeople should come and check our contracts before believing such things. We have never introduced rules like \u2018boys and girls can\u2019t date each other\u2019. The only restriction is on brand endorsements, as they can harm the show and the channel. Many actors became popular because of Taarak Mehta, and they must understand that certain regulations exist to protect the brand.\u201dLooking Ahead: New Ideas and New PlatformsEven after nearly two decades of TMKOC, Modi isn\u2019t slowing down. He hints at creating a new show \u2014 though, for him, it\u2019s about passion, not business. \u201cStorytelling is my passion. I\u2019m planning a new show \u2014 something simple yet meaningful. I\u2019m also exploring ideas for OTT, but short eight-episode formats don\u2019t excite me. I might do a film too, though fewer people are going to theatres now,\u201d he says.Despite changing trends, Modi believes television continues to have a loyal audience\u201cPeople say OTT has taken over, but Taarak Mehta still has a fixed audience. My viewers watch TV daily and appreciate the effort we put in. I\u2019m affected by things that happen, but I prefer to work with a positive mindset and laugh. The show has to continue \u2014 for the audience, for the team, and for the legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n
