They trained for war,&#8217; says hybrid athlete and author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B3KC1Oo7Cuo\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B3KC1Oo7Cuo\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"James Pieratt of Wild Hunt Conditioning\" data-node-id=\"3.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">James Pieratt of Wild Hunt Conditioning<\/a>. The methods included some of history\u2019s most disciplined and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"scientifically informed approaches\" data-node-id=\"3.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">scientifically informed approaches<\/a> to human performance.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">However, one important caveat: while the Soviet system was undeniably effective, it\u2019s worth noting that state-sponsored doping was also a documented part of their elite sports programmes \u2013 a reminder that even the most scientific methods can exist in ethically murky waters.<\/p>\n<p>Spetznaz soldiers<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">&#8216;Spetsnaz were elite soldiers forged through extreme physical and psychological preparation,&#8217; explains Pieratt. &#8216;Their training combined brutal field drills with cutting-edge Soviet sports science. Every session had one goal: create warriors who could survive, dominate, and endure behind enemy lines.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"10\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Pieratt says their methods predated modern &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a62973959\/functional-strength-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a62973959\/functional-strength-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"functional\" data-node-id=\"10.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">functional<\/a> training&#8217; by decades. &#8216;Spetsnaz also trained under extreme psychological stress: blindfolded drills, sleep deprivation, freezing weather and live-fire movement exercises. Pain tolerance wasn\u2019t a bonus, it was mandatory.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"11\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Soviet sports scientists like Verkhoshansky and Medvedyev revolutionised periodisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/a61001609\/guide-to-plyometrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/a61001609\/guide-to-plyometrics\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"plyometrics\" data-node-id=\"11.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plyometrics<\/a>, and fatigue management, explains Pieratt. &#8216;These weren\u2019t gym guys with clipboards. It\u2019s like the perfect full-body explosive movement.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"16\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">They had all the modern equipment necessary, however they were still out in freezing temperatures lifting stones and carrying logs. &#8216;That is strongman-style training, that&#8217;s mental grit,&#8217; says Pieratt.<\/p>\n<p>Calisthenics <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"19\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Pieratt says that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/bodyweight-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/bodyweight-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"bodyweight training\" data-node-id=\"19.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">bodyweight training<\/a> is excellent at making you &#8216;immune to the effects of lactic acid&#8217;, making it a staple for martial artists, a runners, or any athletes. He explains that if you don&#8217;t like the sensation  when your muscles start burning, &#8216;Get more calisthenics in your life: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a62975595\/volume-vs-intensity\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/train-smarter\/a62975595\/volume-vs-intensity\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"high-volume\" data-node-id=\"19.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">high-volume<\/a>, high-intensity calisthenics.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">&#8216;Most of the time what gets you in combat is endurance, Pieratt adds. &#8216;You get fatigued before there\u2019s any shortage of a singular force output. So calisthenics have always been a big part of the Soviet system.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Plyometric Training<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"22\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Yuri Verhoshansky was a pioneer of plyometric training. Pieratt explains this is where depth drop training \u2013 where you start on a higher box, jump down to the ground and as soon as you impact, you hop into another leap \u2013 started appearing. You may have seen football players and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a46798657\/hybrid-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/fitness\/a46798657\/hybrid-training\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"hybrid athletes\" data-node-id=\"22.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hybrid athletes<\/a> alike take part in this method.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"23\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">&#8216;Training like this made guys really powerful, really explosive. Soviet track and field athletes \u2013 there&#8217;s archival footage showing how springy and explosive some of these guys were.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Spatial Awareness Training<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"25\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Soviet paratroopers focused on acrobat training including trampoline jumps, synchronised flips and group acrobatics. &#8216;It taught them not only to be aware of their own bodies in space but also to calculate and observe in the midst of movement \u2013 a kind of physical-spatial intelligence,&#8217; says Pieratt. <\/p>\n<p>Combat Martial Arts<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"27\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">Combat Sambo is a Russian martial art that combines different techniques. Pieratt adds, &#8216;It\u2019s essentially a mix of Russian wrestling, striking, and Japanese judo \u2013 and when you train them really hard for a long time, you get amazing skill sets.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"28\" class=\"css-qrfdb emevuu60\">However, it wasn&#8217;t for the faint of heart, according to Pieratt they weren\u2019t doing the sport version, they were gouging eyes, striking throats and training for life or death on the battlefield.
