(Unsplash: Ozkan Guner)

When fluoride is present in saliva, it makes the remineralised material stronger.

“Fluoride combines with calcium and with phosphate to form a very rigid mineral,” Professor Walsh says.

The fluoride-containing mineral is more resistant to acids than enamel would be on its own.

Virginia Dickson-Swift, a public health researcher at La Trobe University, says fluoride can reverse early decay in the mouth.

“It’s kind of a repair tool if you think about it, almost like a puncture kit,” Dr Dickson-Swift says.

When ingested, it can also be incorporated into bones in the same way, but most fluoride passes harmlessly through the body and is excreted.

At high amounts — well above the amount added to drinking water in Australia — fluoride can cause a condition called fluorosis.

Mild dental fluorosis causes stains on teeth in children, and when it’s severe it can cause bone weakness.

Other than discolouration, mild dental fluorosis doesn’t have any side effects. We certainly seen that in Queensland,” Dr Dickson-Swift says.

This effect has also been seen overseas, such as one study which compared two cities in the Canadian province of Alberta — one that stopped fluoridating water, and one that didn’t.

Children in the non-fluoridated city had consistently higher decay rates.

How do I know if I have fluoridated water?

Dr Dickson-Swift advises checking with your local council to see if your water source is fluoridated.

“One of the biggest things that I’ve found in communities that I’ve been working in over the years is many communities don’t know whether their water is fluoridated or not,” she says.

“So they’re not actually making informed decisions about how they look after their oral health.”

Most Australians live in areas with fluoridated water, but not all — particularly in Queensland, where most councils have voted to remove it.

If you use a rainwater tank instead of mains water, you also won’t have fluoridated water.

Bottled water doesn’t necessarily have fluoride in it. Bottled water can contain some naturally occurring fluoride, but if it’s added, it must be labelled in Australia.

Will my water filter remove fluoride?

It depends upon which type of filter your water jug uses.

Oliver Jones, a chemist at RMIT University, says most off-the-shelf water filters won’t remove fluoride.

“If you use something like granular activated carbon, which is a common filter, that doesn’t actually take fluoride out very easily,” Professor Jones says.

But some, like ion exchange filters, can remove fluoride.

Most off-the-shelf jug filters won’t remove fluoride. (Getty Images: Ekaterina Vasileva-Bagler)

Can you keep your teeth healthy without fluoridated water?

If you don’t have access to fluoridated water, or you’re losing access, your teeth aren’t inevitably going to get worse — but you will need to be more careful to keep them healthy.

“It’s going to increase your risk. So that means you need to increase your prevention,” Professor Walsh says.

He says good brushing habits, and lowering sources of sugar and acid in your diet, can both lower your risk of dental decay.

The simplest intervention, Dr Dickson-Swift says, is to brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day — and avoid rinsing your mouth out afterwards.

“The minute you rinse your mouth, you’re rinsing the fluoride off your teeth.”

Good tooth brushing habits can make up for losing fluoride in the water supply.
