{"id":281281,"date":"2025-11-13T07:39:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T07:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/281281\/"},"modified":"2025-11-13T07:39:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T07:39:13","slug":"contact-tracing-underway-in-queensland-as-health-authorities-brace-for-further-measles-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/281281\/","title":{"rendered":"Contact tracing underway in Queensland as health authorities brace for further measles cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Health authorities are bracing for more cases of measles after five people presented with the virus across Queensland in the past week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The outbreak has prompted Queensland Health to alert counterparts in New South Wales as confirmed cases spike across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In Australia, there have been 153 cases of measles recorded in the year to date \u2014 nearly three times the 2024 figure and the highest number of cases since 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Health authorities in Western Australia are also on alert after <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-10\/measles-warning-issued-or-wa-south-west-and-great-southern\/105981388\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105981388\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recording the state&#8217;s highest number of cases<\/a> since 1997.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-12\/qld-measles-cases-traced-to-jelly-roll-concert-at-brisbane\/106002746\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Three confirmed cases of measles traced to Brisbane concert<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Queensland Health says the three infected people were at last month&#8217;s concert of American singer Jelly Roll at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and is warning others who attended to be alert for symptoms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Queensland Health confirmed three cases were connected to the Jelly Roll concert held in Brisbane last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Two of the cases, unrelated to the concert, were reported in the West Moreton and central Queensland areas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Contact tracing is now underway, with notifications to be sent to those who attended the concert at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on October 24.<\/p>\n<p>Travellers urged to check vaccination status<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Of the five new cases identified, all are between the ages of 30 to 49 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Only one person is reported to have been vaccinated against the virus overseas, while the others are only partially vaccinated or not vaccinated at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Thirty cases have been recorded in Queensland so far this year, 12 of which were acquired overseas. (ABC News)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Queensland Chief Health Officer Catherine McDougall has urged members of the public to check their vaccination status, especially if they&#8217;re travelling overseas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing a lot of measles cases coming from Indonesia, Bali specifically, but also Cambodia and Vietnam,&#8221; Dr McDougall said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Children are particularly vulnerable and we&#8217;re particularly worried about Schoolies coming up \u2014 we really want them to make sure they&#8217;re vaccinated before they go.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Paediatric infectious disease physician at teh National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance Dr Archana Koirala said the drivers of this outbreak were likely people travelling more frequently and immunisation rates in children dropping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot more people movement \u2014 during the pandemic, there was almost zero travel in and out of Australia,&#8221; she aid.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;With hotspots overseas, the increase in cases has nothing to do with the virus itself and more to do with the population immunity, as a whole, being less than it was before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-22\/measles-cases-on-the-rise-australia-explainer\/105799284\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Is Australia about to see the return of endemic measles?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">So far this year, there have been 121 measles notifications across Australia \u2014 the highest number since 2019, when there were 284 notifications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Health Minister Tim Nicholls said anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical advice before attending a hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Please don&#8217;t go to an emergency department, because that will spread it,&#8221;
