there are now 187,000 Victorians out of work.

The latest ABS statistics, released on Thursday, show Victoria’s unemployment rate at 4.7 per cent, with the Australia-wide rate remaining steady at 4.4 per cent.

Tasmania had the lowest unemployment rate at 4 per cent, with Queensland and WA both sitting at 4.2 per cent, NSW and the ACT on 4.3 per cent, South Australia on 4.5 per cent and the Northern Territory on 4.6 per cent.

The new figures come just days after the <a class="body-link" eight states and territories across 10 metrics, with Victoria finishing last overall due to uncompetitive land tax and stamp duty rates, licensing requirements to do business, and payroll tax.

Shadow treasurer Jess Wilson said the high unemployment rate was a direct result of the Allan government’s economic mismanagement – which has also resulted in net debt growing by $2 million every hour.

“Victoria’s high unemployment rate is a direct consequence of Labor’s ever-increasing taxes and burdensome red tape that continues to stifle economic growth and opportunity,” Ms Wilson said.

“Month, after month, after month under Labor, Victoria’s unemployment rate remains stubbornly higher than comparable interstate economies and the national average.”

She said it would take a change of government to restore the state’s reputation as an attractive investment destination, pledging a Liberal and Nationals government would do this by “cutting taxes and restoring proper financial management.”

Speaking to Sky News Australia on Tuesday, BCA boss Bran Black said while Victoria had improved its planning system, the government had “a lot of work that it needs to do in terms of its costs and its regulatory settings.”

“The figures speak for themselves: In 17 of the last 18 months, Victoria has led the country in relation to unemployment.

“And if you look at business investment up until June of this year, which is the most recent metric that we’ve got, Victoria went back 1.5 per cent against the national average of moving forward point six of a per cent.”

However Premier Allan rejected the findings, telling reporters the BCA had “a record of not understanding what’s important to businesses and working people here in Victoria”.

“What I’m focused on is not what the Business Council out of Sydney have to say about the Victorian economy, it’s what businesses who are investing in the Victorian economy right now have to say,” Premier Allan said.

“We continue to be the state that attracts more jobs and attracts more new business investment than any other state, and we do so in an environment where we are continuing to work incredibly hard.”

Victoria’s unemployment rate has remained the worst in the nation, with new figures showing there are now
