Emerald Fennell\u2019s vision for Wuthering Heights<\/a> is coming into focus.<\/p>\n

The first full-length trailer for the Saltburn writer-director\u2019s already controversial adaptation of Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s 1847 novel sketches out an epic love story \u2013 \u201cthe greatest love story of all time\u201d, according to a title card \u2013 beyond the erotic visuals<\/a> of the first trailer.<\/p>\n

The trailer sees Bront\u00eb\u2019s star-crossed lovers, Catherine (Margot Robbie) and Heathcliff (Jacob Elordi) meeting first as children, then becoming tangled in a torturous love affair as adults in the West Yorkshire moors. \u201cWhat would you do, Heathcliff, if you were rich?\u201d Robbie\u2019s Cathy asks Elordi\u2019s Heathcliff. \u201cI suppose I\u2019d do what all rich men do,\u201d he answers. \u201cLive in a big house, be cruel to my servants, take a wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

As in the book \u2013 the only novel completed by Bront\u00eb \u2013 Cathy marries the wealthy Edgar Linton (Shazad Latif) to retain her social status, causing a devastated Heathcliff to flee and vow revenge. But the two struggle with their feelings and, indeed, the trailer includes several clips of kissing and crying in the rain to a new song created by Charli xcx, Chains of Love, as part of a new album to be released with the film in February.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Viewers also glimpse some anachronistic fashions and Fennell\u2019s signature colorful flourishes. \u201cSo kiss me, and let us both be damned,\u201d Elordi\u2019s Heathcliff says to Cathy at trailer\u2019s end.<\/p>\n

The Promising Young Woman director, known for her love of mordant envelope-pushing, found controversy from the start with her erotically charged take on the English literature classic. The film\u2019s casting director, Kharmel Cochrane, defended her choices<\/a> after some suggested that Robbie was too old to play the role of a young maiden, while others questioned Elordi\u2019s ethnicity, as Heathcliff is generally perceived to have a Romany or Gypsy background and darker skin.<\/p>\n

Reactions to a test screening<\/a> in August were reportedly mixed, with one attender calling the adaptation \u201caggressively provocative and tonally abrasive\u201d with one scene of a public hanging in which the \u201ccondemned man ejaculates mid-execution\u201d.<\/p>\n

Fennell responded to some of the criticisms in September; at Bront\u00eb Women\u2019s Writing festival, the Oscar-winning screenwriter said the novel \u201ccracked me open\u201d after reading it at 14 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been obsessed. I\u2019ve been driven mad by this book,\u201d she said. \u201cI know that if somebody else made it, I\u2019d be furious. It\u2019s very personal material for everyone. It\u2019s very illicit. The way we relate to the characters is very private.<\/p>\n

\u201c[It is] an act of extreme masochism to try and make a film of something that means this much to you,\u201d she added. \u201cThere\u2019s an enormous amount of sado-masochism in this book. There\u2019s a reason people were deeply shocked by it.\u201d<\/p>\n
