(ABC News: Julian Robins)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It comes one year after the corporate watchdog found <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asic.gov.au\/regulatory-resources\/find-a-document\/reports\/rep-785-better-banking-for-indigenous-consumers\/\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four of the country&#8217;s banks, which had a significant number of First Nations customers, had caused &#8220;financial distress&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Taken advantage for years&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Susan Potts lives in Broome, 2,200 kilometres north of Perth, and was recently refunded ten years of fees charged by the Commonwealth Bank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said she was only made aware of the charges after Kimberley financial counsellor Alan Gray spotted the fees in her bank statements while investigating an unrelated scam.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;They were taking [fees] all these years and we&#8217;re only on low income, all on disability, so it&#8217;s a bit unfair,&#8221; Ms Potts said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">\u00a0&#8220;It&#8217;s just nice this is coming to the surface. (ABC Kimberley: Andrew Seabourne)<\/p>\n<p>ASIC finds small progress<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">ASIC&#8217;s report found some banks had made progress to &#8220;better understand First Nations customers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some institutions increased the number of interpreters on designated customer care helplines, while others had offered cultural awareness training to staff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But both financial counsellors agreed banks should do more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t matter how many times a financial counsellor tells the big banks there is no street delivery of mail in the outback \u2014 they never, ever get the message,&#8221; Mr Gray said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They [our clients] don&#8217;t have a home computer, they don&#8217;t have a desk and a chair, they don&#8217;t have a home internet connection, and they have no way of storing documents.&#8221;<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man with a white beard and a wide-rimmed hat looks at the camera\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/57123eee4ea0099b67cb8d33f4c23adc\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Alan Gray of Bush Money Mob has been campaigning for Kimberley residents due refunds.
