But recently, the island\u2019s tranquility was disturbed when the area was hit with a devastating hail storm, impacting hundreds of vulnerable birds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763083208_457_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"map of island \" width=\"792\" height=\"864\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 864\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Amos Rehabilitation Keep<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">Animal advocates on the mainland knew they had to help. Rescuers from <a href=\"https:\/\/utmsi.utexas.edu\/amos-rehabilitation-keep\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amos Rehabilitation Keep<\/a> (ARK), a rehab and conservation group at the University of Texas at Austin\u2019s Marine Science Institute, traveled to the southern end of the island, where they soon discovered the magnitude of the situation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763083209_7_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"boats on water \" width=\"792\" height=\"705\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 705\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Amos Rehabilitation Keep<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">\u201cSome birds had fairly severe head trauma, some were very weak and lethargic, and many had severely fractured wings,\u201d ARK staff supervisor Andrew Orgill told The Dodo.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763083209_16_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"birds being transported \" width=\"792\" height=\"941\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 941\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Amos Rehabilitation Keep<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">Aided by several partners, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/tpwd.texas.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Parks &amp; Wildlife Department<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbbep.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harteresearch.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harte Research Institute<\/a> and the Texas State Aquarium, rescuers transported about 390 birds off of the island and into the ARK rehab facility, where team members could examine them.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">\u201cWe started with the most injured and most critical and then worked our way through the rest,\u201d Orgill said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763083209_372_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"pelicans at rescue center \" width=\"792\" height=\"523\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 523\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Amos Rehabilitation Keep<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">Today, 120 birds are still at ARK. Others have moved to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gcwr.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gulf Coast Wildlife Rehabilitation<\/a> facility and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wingsrescue.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wings Rescue Center<\/a>. Some birds only have minor bruising, while others suffer from more intense fractures that could take up to five weeks to heal. Regardless, rescuers are not giving up, and they\u2019re keeping their hopes high.<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"1\">\u201c[W]e are optimistic that many of them will make a full recovery!\u201d Orgill said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763083210_880_scale;webp=auto;jpeg_quality=60.jpg\"  alt=\"birds at rescue facility \" width=\"792\" height=\"782\" style=\"display:block;height:auto;aspect-ratio:792 \/ 782\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>Amos Rehabilitation Keep<\/p>\n<p data-element-index=\"0\">The vast majority of the rescued animals were eastern brown pelicans, large birds known for their long bills and silvery gray feathers. According to Orgill, these birds were only taken off of the endangered species list in the last 20 years, and while their population is recovering, weather events like this can have considerably negative impacts on their continued health.
