These auroras blazed farther south than usual, due to a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/severe-geomagnetic-storm-sparks-northern-lights-across-north-america-and-as-far-south-as-mexico-photos\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/severe-geomagnetic-storm-sparks-northern-lights-across-north-america-and-as-far-south-as-mexico-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">severe geomagnetic storm<\/a> spawned by powerful solar eruptions.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-5ec28b19-106d-46ec-97fc-1e5680d2aeaa\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>What is it?<\/p>\n<p id=\"b70aae2c-ee29-4a78-8d59-5773d52cde6e\">A <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coronal mass ejection<\/a> (CME) is a solar eruption that sends a huge cloud of solar plasma hurtling into space. (Image credit: NOAA)<a id=\"elk-4ea5f98e-f0cf-42ba-97b1-a0d90d63dd91\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Why is it amazing?<\/p>\n<p id=\"aff6cc88-2fa9-4bca-9789-710d15528be3\">This stunning event was triggered by a severe <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/severe-geomagnetic-storm-sparks-northern-lights-across-north-america-and-as-far-south-as-mexico-photos\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/auroras\/severe-geomagnetic-storm-sparks-northern-lights-across-north-america-and-as-far-south-as-mexico-photos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">G4-class <\/a>geomagnetic storm, one of the strongest in recent years, caused by a CME that slammed into Earth&#8217;s magnetic field. The impact supercharged the planet&#8217;s magnetosphere, allowing charged solar particles to penetrate deeper into the atmosphere than usual. As a result, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">aurora borealis<\/a> \u2014typically confined to polar regions \u2014 was seen across the continental U.S., including in states like Texas, Arizona and even parts of Mexico.
