{"id":284946,"date":"2025-11-14T23:25:20","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T23:25:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/284946\/"},"modified":"2025-11-14T23:25:20","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T23:25:20","slug":"esperance-weekender-closure-highlights-media-diversity-issues-in-regional-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/284946\/","title":{"rendered":"Esperance Weekender closure highlights media diversity issues in regional areas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Esperance Weekender has published its final edition and joined a growing number of regional publications shutting their doors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The South Coast paper is the last independent masthead to leave the Goldfields and one of only a handful left in regional Western Australia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Weekender, which announced its closure in this week&#8217;s edition, was started by a group of local benefactors who saw a need for a local newspaper after the town\u2019s only weekly paper, The Esperance Express, ceased operating during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Weekender editor Geoff Vivian, who joined the paper in 2023, said the budget had always been marginal and that shareholders saw the venture as more of a &#8220;social enterprise&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;There was only one of those four years where it managed to pay for all of its bills, and it wasn&#8217;t last financial year,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;Media diversity shrinking<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The closure of the Esperance Weekender coincides with the 130th birthday of the Seven West Media-owned Kalgoorlie Miner, which is the last remaining print publication in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In WA, the majority of regional newspapers are owned by Seven West Media, which has 19 regional mastheads across the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier this year, concerns were raised about media diversity due to the <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-30\/southern-cross-austereo-and-seven-west-media-merge\/105833848\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105833848\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposed merger<\/a> between Seven West Media and Southern Cross Media.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Several newspapers stacked on top of each other.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/faf17e5f3bcedec27daedd592bdb2cec\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Western Australia&#8217;s only regional daily newspaper, the Kalgoorlie Miner, has celebrated its 130th anniversary. (ABC Goldfields: Jarrod Lucas)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Vivian said the decline in regional publications and the concentration of ownership were points of concern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Democracy and newspapers grew up together over about the past 400 years in our culture,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It worries me that there\u2019s almost only one owner of newspapers in WA \u2014 it certainly owns more than nine out of 10 of all newspapers in WA, as well as the national TV network.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Local and Independent News Association (LINA) executive director Claire Stuchbery said the decline of independent news media was about revenue streams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing more and more of that advertising dollar moving to the social platforms, and that loss has really impacted business models, &#8220;she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Similarly, we&#8217;re seeing people not necessarily wanting to pay for news.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Stuchbery said smaller, independent newsrooms could look to diversify their revenue streams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That might be in helping to organise community events, that might be in reader contributions in other formats,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So looking at a really broad array of revenue streams that are potential ways that local newsrooms can make their work more sustainable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A ginger-haired woman taking a selfie in a radio studio.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fddf7201c36746c986a4a73d28534ad4\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Claire Stuchberry works for LINA, a not-for-profit supporting local and independent media. (Supplied: LINA)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Stuchbery said news content was also increasingly syndicated from metropolitan newsrooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said international, national and statewide news remained important, but people needed to know what was going on where they lived and worked.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;A lot of that content is being reported from Sydney, which means that it&#8217;s further away from issues that are really valid to local communities,&#8221; Ms Stuchbery said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said that not only affected the diversity of stories for local communities, but also the stories from the regions that could have a broader reach.<\/p>\n<p>History of news in the Goldfields<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Goldfields&#8217; first newspaper, the Coolgardie Miner, was published in 1894.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Kalgoorlie-Boulder historian Tim Moore said there had been more than 60 mastheads in the Goldfields during the early part of the 20th century.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A smiling, middle-aged man sits in front of a microfilm machine.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/d97fe520f7d9d38e568b892e453229dd\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tim Moore says several printing presses were sent to the region during the gold rush.
