\n\tSimu Liu<\/a> loves making animated movies \u2014 for good reason.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve definitely shown up at recording sessions in pajamas and flip-flops,\u201d he tells me while promoting his new animated Netflix<\/a> family film \u201cIn Your Dreams<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s really awesome. All that matters is you\u2019re giving the vocal performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDirected and co-written by Alexander Woo and Erik Benson, \u201cIn Your Dreams\u201d follows two young siblings (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport and Elias Janssen) who meet the mythical Sandman (Omid Djalili) in their dreams and ask him to keep their parents (Liu and Cristin Milioti<\/a>) together after they suspect they\u2019re on the brink of splitting up.<\/p>\n

\n\tLiu\u2019s character is a musician, so it\u2019s no surprise he was asked, alongside Milioti, to sing an original song for the movie. \u201cI don\u2019t think I signed on knowing that we were gonna do an original song, but we did, and I got to do it with Cristin, which is so amazing,\u201d Liu says. \u201cShe\u2019s a fantastic singer, like Broadway level.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen I remind Liu that Milioti won a Grammy in 2013 for best musical theater album for her work in \u201cOnce: A New Musical,\u201d<\/a> he cracks, \u201cI was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for best fight, which I lost to Sydney Sweeney.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\n\tAt one point in the movie, the Sandman talks about how dreams can depict how \u201cperfect the world could be, how perfect it should be,\u201d so I ask Liu what\u2019s his idea of a perfect world. \u201cMy god, the internet doesn\u2019t exist,\u2019 he says. \u201cMaybe phones don\u2019t exist\u2026Everyone is talking to each other. And more important than that, everyone is listening to each other and people lead with acceptance and curiosity and they\u2019re not leading with, \u2018I\u2019m gonna try to dunk on this person on social media so that I get likes.\u2019 They\u2019re saying, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re all stuck here together so let\u2019s just figure out a way to get along and not kill each other while we\u2019re at it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThat said, Liu has become known for speaking up on social media against right-leaning politics. The possibility of backlash doesn\u2019t worry him. \u201cI probably should be more scared of it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the need to speak his mind overcomes any fears. \u201cI just feel like there\u2019s something about the internet that makes people just crazy,\u201d Liu says. \u201cThere\u2019s something about the publicness of it and where people love being the guy to put someone else down [or] put an entire group of people down. I am so not for that energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe praises people like Melissa Barrera<\/a>, his co-star in the upcoming television series \u201cThe Copenhagen Test,\u201d for being \u201cwonderfully courageous and outspoken.\u201d The actress was fired from the \u201cScream\u201d franchise in 2023<\/a> after producers deemed her pro-Palestine social posts as antisemitic.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat is like the bravest woman I have ever met and the most outspoken and most fearless and the most assured in what she believes in is right,\u201d Liu says. \u201cRegardless of whether or not you agree with her or everything she has to say, you can\u2019t not respect that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tEarlier this year, Liu reprised his role as Shang-Chi<\/a> in the upcoming Marvel<\/a> film \u201cAvengers: Doomsday<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt was really awesome, exciting,\u201d he says. \u201cSo many actors that I grew up watching, and to get to kind of play in that sandbox with them\u2026it\u2019s a dream come true. I grew up watching superhero movies and wanting to believe that the outcasts and the nerds and the weirdos could find it in themselves to have superpowers and save the day. That\u2019s what 12-year-old me clung on to. I still believe, for better or for worse, in the power of what those movies stand for today.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLiu hits back at the wave of criticism that\u2019s been hurled at superhero movies. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of fashionable now to hate on it,\u201d he says. \u201cI think there are valid critiques of the way that movies are made, the way that production budgets are handled, I think that there are a lot of valid things to say, but this idea of shitting on superhero movies as a genre, I don\u2019t know. I don\u2019t know I because I am speaking as somebody who just absolutely loved watching them as a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n
