The United States President has announced he will repeal tariffs on products including Australia’s largest US export, in a sweeping backdown.

Donald Trump signed an order on Saturday morning, Australian time, reducing US tariffs on agriculture imports including beef.

Other imports swept up in the change include bananas, coffee, tea, oranges, fruit juices and tropical fruits, and tomatoes, as voters and Democrats pressured the administration to deal with rising costs of living.

The products have become exempt from his “reciprocal” tariff rule.

On April 2, he announced the sweeping tariff structure to address “unfair” trade settings between the US and the world while his administration looked to address issues in domestic production capacity.

Other existing duties, however, remain in place.

Australia’s Trade Minister Don Farrell celebrated the White House’s decision to scrap the baseline 10 per cent tariff.

“We welcome the removal of tariffs on Australia’s world-class agricultural exports, including beef,” he said.

“The Albanese Government’s position has been consistent and clear. Tariffs are an act of economic self-harm and ultimately hurts American consumers.

“We maintain our position that tariffs on any Australian products are unjustified, and continue to advocate for their removal.”

The new exemptions – which take effect retroactively at midnight on Thursday, local time – mark a sharp reversal for Trump, who has long insisted that the sweeping import duties he imposed earlier this year are not fueling inflation.

Democrats have won a string of victories in state and local elections in Virginia, New Jersey and New York City, where affordability was a key topic.

Asked if further changes were planned, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, “I don’t think it’ll be necessary.”

“We just did a little bit of a rollback,” he said.

“The prices of coffee were a little bit high, now they’ll be on the low side in a very short period.”

National Farmers’ Federation President David Jochinke, previously expressed disappointment about the beef industry being caught up in the trade war shortly after the tariffs were first announced.

“Especially when we’re a trusted or reliable source of product that not only does the US seek out, but also because we’ve had the strong trading relationship over the last 20 years,” Mr Jochinke told Sky News.

“Ultimately, there’s going to be pain in Australian agriculture and as we heard called out, not only is it going to our beef, it’s going be our sheep meat and our wine that will be affected by any tariffs that are placed on any imports going to the US.”

According to data from Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), some of the US’ largest companies and fast-food giants use beef from Down Under.

They include McDonald’s, Burger King, Chipotle, and Costco.

The US imported 99,607 tonnes of Australian beef between the beginning of 2025 to April, when the tariffs were announced.

It marked an increase of 31 per cent compared to that time last year, CommSec reported after President Trump’s announcement.
