(ABC News: Dane Hirst)

And Dr Mackay said those rates were increasing, especially among young people.

“We see children as young as three being diagnosed,” she said.

She said one thing many people might not consider was the impact food insecurity can have on people living with diabetes.

In remote communities, the supply of nutritious food is unreliable, and it often comes at double the cost of city-bought groceries.

“It’s really hard in a lot of places to get access to the nutritious food people need to eat, costs are high, particularly in remote communities, and we know that cost-of-living pressures are getting worse,” Dr Mackay said.

Dangers of walking barefoot

In Alice Springs, podiatrists Frances Bunji Elcoate and Amy Schonewille say one of the least known dangers for people living with diabetes is foot health.

“Foot disease and diabetes go hand in hand, unfortunately,” Ms Schonewille said.

“Diabetes-related food complications can include nerve damage, so people [are] unable to feel their feet, and it can also change the blood flow.”

Amy Schonewille says diabetes can often causes issues with patient’s feet.
