{"id":289968,"date":"2025-11-17T08:05:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T08:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/289968\/"},"modified":"2025-11-17T08:05:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T08:05:10","slug":"former-ireland-star-galvin-recovering-from-stroke","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/289968\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Ireland star Galvin recovering from stroke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tottenham Hotspur and Republic of Ireland winger Tony Galvin is recovering after suffering a stroke, his former club confirmed on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The 69-year-old&#8217;s Ireland career saw him earn 29 caps after representing England at schoolboy level.<\/p>\n<p>He was a key component of Jack Charlton\u2019s groundbreaking team and played a significant role in Ireland\u2019s first major tournament appearance at Euro 88.<\/p>\n<p>Galvin was instrumental in the team that famously defeated England and started all three group stage matches at the tournament against England, the USSR, and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>Galvin spent nine years at Spurs from 1978 to 1987, where he made 201 league appearances. The club released a statement extending their best wishes, which read: &#8220;Everyone at the club would like to extend their thoughts and best wishes to Tony Galvin, our 1984 UEFA Cup and 1981 &amp; 82 FA Cup winner, who is now recovering following a stroke.
