{"id":291643,"date":"2025-11-18T02:36:07","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T02:36:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/291643\/"},"modified":"2025-11-18T02:36:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T02:36:07","slug":"sydney-resident-died-after-triple-zero-call-didnt-work-on-samsung-phone-tpg-says-australia-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/291643\/","title":{"rendered":"Sydney resident died after triple-zero call didn\u2019t work on Samsung phone, TPG says | Australia news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">TPG \u2013 the parent company of Vodafone \u2013 has said a Lebara customer who tried to dial triple zero on an incompatible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/samsung\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Samsung<\/a> device could not make the call and subsequently died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">TPG said in a statement to the ASX that it was informed of the incident \u2013 which took place on 13 November in Sydney \u2013 at 5.22pm yesterday after advice from NSW Ambulance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The company was not experiencing a network outage, it said, but early investigations suggest the customer was using a Samsung device using software that was not compatible with making triple-zero calls on the TPG network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up: AU Breaking News email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">TPG, Optus and Telstra sent out advisories about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/au\/support\/mobile-devices\/issue-with-some-older-galaxy-devices-calling-triple-zero\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqlP4Qnz-GLtoH88hSYFrhBK3xwYAop0yAC1151gPGxytHmXbgs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">some older devices<\/a> late in October. Under the rules, customers who do not update their handsets after a period of 28-35 days will be blocked from the network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The customer was on a Lebara service, a company that resells mobile services on the Vodafone network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cCustomer safety remains our highest priority,\u201d the TPG chief executive, I\u00f1aki Berroeta, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThis is a tragic incident and thoughts are with the individual\u2019s family and loved ones. Access to emergency services is critical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe urge all customers with outdated software to replace or update their devices without delay to ensure they can reach triple zero in an emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">NSW Ambulance was approached for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It is estimated about 50,000 of these older Samsung devices will be blocked from being able to connect to mobile networks, after Telstra and Optus last month advised the older devices were not able to connect to Vodafone\u2019s network in the event both of their networks are unavailable and a user needs to call triple zero.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Under the triple-zero rules, devices that in some circumstances cannot connect to triple zero need to be cut off from mobile networks. The telcos have been advising customers if they need to upgrade their devices but it has not yet been the full amount of notice period required before the devices are due to be cut off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The device models are:<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy A7 (2017)<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy A5 2017<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy J1 2016<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy J3 2016<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy J5 2017<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy Note 5<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy S6<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy S6 Edge<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy S6 Edge+<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy S7<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Galaxy S7 Edge<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Newer Samsung devices may need a software update in order to continue operating. Samsung has provided a list of those devices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/au\/support\/mobile-devices\/issue-with-some-older-galaxy-devices-calling-triple-zero\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqlP4Qnz-GLtoH88hSYFrhBK3xwYAop0yAC1151gPGxytHmXbgs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The device manufacturer told Guardian Australia last month it was working with the carriers on the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/sep\/19\/three-people-died-when-optus-network-upgrade-affected-triple-zero-calls-ceo-confirms\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a number of deaths<\/a> during an Optus triple zero outage in September. The Optus independent investigation into the incident is due before the end of 2025.
