{"id":291659,"date":"2025-11-18T02:44:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-18T02:44:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/291659\/"},"modified":"2025-11-18T02:44:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-18T02:44:09","slug":"fijis-draw-for-2026-nations-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/291659\/","title":{"rendered":"Fiji\u2019s draw for 2026 Nations Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Flying Fijians have officially been unveiled as one of 12 teams in the inaugural Nations Championship, marking a historic rugby moment for the Pacific Island nation and the growth of the international game as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>SANZAAR and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/six-nations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Six Nations<\/a> Rugby announced the joint venture on Monday, which was ratified by the World Rugby Council in 2023. \u201cThe Nations Championship has the power to redefine the future of rugby,\u201d a press release read, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/fiji\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fiji<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/japan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a> joining a star-studded lineup of teams.<\/p>\n<p>All four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/the-rugby-championship\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rugby Championship<\/a> nations have been involved \u2013 Australia, Argentina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/south-africa\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Africa<\/a> and New Zealand \u2013 with the two invitation sides completing the Southern Hemisphere group. The Six Nations teams will represent the Northern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>All six representatives from the north will travel down south in July, playing a different team in each of their three fixtures during that international window. They will host the other three southern teams in November, setting the stage for some blockbuster matchups for the Flying Fijians.<\/p>\n<p>Fiji start their Nations Championship campaign with an opening round clash against Wales, before hosting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/england\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">England<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/scotland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scotland<\/a> during the Southern Hemisphere Series. They will play France, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/ireland\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ireland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/italy\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Italy<\/a> away from home ahead of the Finals Weekend in London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a historic moment for Fiji. Being invited into the Nations Championship places us alongside the very best in world rugby,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/players\/john-sanday\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">John Sanday<\/a>, Fiji Rugby Union Chairman, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor our children playing on village grounds, for our families gathered to watch every test match and for Fijians everywhere, this milestone belongs to you.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFiji\u2019s rugby, courageous, dynamic and full of flair has long captured the world\u2019s imagination. Now we have a consistent, structured top-tier stage to showcase our talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those six rounds will determine the final standings for the Finals Weekend, which will see the top-ranked sides from the north and south face off to become champions. Points will also be awarded in all matches to determine the winning hemisphere for the year.<\/p>\n<p>In the final round before the finals, which will be three days of double-headers at Twickenham\u2019s Allianz Stadium, England will host the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/new-zealand\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">All Blacks<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/new-zealand\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Zealand<\/a> were beaten 33-19 by the English at that very venue last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Scotland host Japan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/wales\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wales<\/a> will look to defeat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/australia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Australia<\/a> in Cardiff for the first time since 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rugbypass.com\/teams\/france\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a> will take on Argentina, and Ireland play South Africa. Every round offers massive showdowns between some of the world\u2019s best teams, and each result is going to matter.<\/p>\n<p>Japan coach Eddie Jones described the Nations Championship as an important \u201cspringboard\u201d for the Brave Blossoms ahead of the 2027 Men\u2019s Rugby World Cup. This biennial competition gives the likes of Fiji and Japan regular high-stakes games against international juggernauts.<\/p>\n<p>Brendan Morris, CEO of SANZAAR, added: \u201cThe establishment of The Nations Championship is a historic and exciting move for rugby that will see the SANZAAR Member Unions, with the addition of Fiji and Japan, take on the best of Europe and the Northern Hemisphere on a biennial basis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSANZAAR nations have a proud and successful record at international level.
