As of Sunday, the first back-to-back champions in 25 years have already started making deals with an eye toward sustaining their success into the future. <\/p>\n<p>The Dodgers made a trade with the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/seattle-mariners\/\" title=\"Seattle Mariners\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"111338\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle Mariners<\/a> that flew well under the MLB radar, coming as it did on the same day that Seattle made the first major splash of the offseason by <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/seattle-mariners\/mariners-finalizing-contract-with-josh-naylor-on-five-year-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreeing to terms with free agent<\/a> first baseman <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/mlb\/player\/joshua-douglas-naylor\/\" title=\"Josh Naylor\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"111340\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Josh Naylor<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old Naylor belted nine home runs in 191 at-bats for the Mariners after heading north from the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/arizona-diamondbacks\/\" title=\"Arizona Diamondbacks\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"111337\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/45818659\/mariners-acquire-1b-josh-naylor-trade-d-backs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at the trade deadline, in exchange<\/a> for a pair of pitching prospects.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/detroit-tigers\/eliezer-alfonzo-free-agent-dodgers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Eliezer-Alfonzo-Tigers-Dodgers-free-agent.jpg\" width=\"242\" height=\"161\" class=\"size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dodgers Prospect Recently Added to 40-Man Roster<\/p>\n<p>Now, the Mariners have parted with another pitching prospect, in a trade with the Dodgers this time, and received one in return in a deal that the Seattle club <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Mariners\/status\/1990246699865129094\" rel=\"nofollow\">announced on social media Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the trade, the Dodgers say goodbye to 25-year-old lefty <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/mlb\/player\/robinson-ortiz\/\" title=\"Robinson Ortiz\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"111341\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Robinson Ortiz<\/a>, who has been pitching for the Los Angeles organization since 2017, but in a minor league career marred by injury setbacks and the 2020 pandemic year minor league shutdown, the Dominican Republic native <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=ortiz-007rob\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">never saw a Major League mound<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The trade came 11 days after the Dodgers <a href=\"https:\/\/dodgerblue.com\/dodgers-roster-ryan-ward-robinson-ortiz-added-to-40-man\/2025\/11\/06\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">added Ortiz to their 40-man roster<\/a>, protecting him from being snapped up by another team in the Rule 5 draft. Now, they have cut ties with Ortiz after all, but by trading him, the Dodgers get a prospect in return.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/los-angeles-dodgers\/world-series-payrolls-salaries\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/FReddie-Freeman-Vladimir-Guerrero-Dodgers-Blue-Jays-payroll.jpg\" width=\"242\" height=\"161\" class=\"size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ortiz Rose Steadily Through System<\/p>\n<p>Had Ortiz been claimed in the Rule 5 draft, Los Angeles would have received no compensation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrtiz certainly hadn\u2019t been on anyone\u2019s radar previously,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dodgersway.com\/dodgers-make-early-offseason-trade-with-mariners-right-after-josh-naylor-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote Katrina Stebbins of Dodgers Way<\/a>. \u201cHe shot up from High-A to Triple-A this season and posted a 2.73 ERA in 59 1\/3 innings across all three levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To say that Ortiz was on no one\u2019s radar may be a slight overstatement. While it is true that Ortiz was a largely overlooked international signing in 2017, receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseballamerica.com\/players\/6547-robinson-ortiz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a modest $60,000 bonus<\/a> at the time, and taking a full year after he became eligible for a pro contract to connect with a team that wanted to sign him, the young southpaw advanced steadily through the Dodgers\u2019 ranks.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/los-angeles-dodgers\/dodgers-cut-ties-with-2-5-million-ex-no-1-prospect-get-low-minors-pitcher\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Diego-Cartaya-trade-Los-Angeles-Dodgers-prospect.jpg\" width=\"242\" height=\"161\" class=\"size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Champs Pick Up 22-Year-Old Righty<\/p>\n<p>Despite not being invited to the Dodgers alternate training site in 2020, he was raked the No. 25 prospect on the Los Angeles system by the start of 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/dodgersdaily.net\/2021\/12\/13\/dodgers-top-30-prospects-robinson-ortiz\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Dodgers Daily<\/a>. Unfortunately, he suffered a forearm strain that caused him to miss all but four games in 2021, and the entire 2022 season.<\/p>\n<p>When he returned, however, he made it to the Dodgers Triple-A level by 2025. <\/p>\n<p>In return, the Mariners sent 22-year-old righty <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/mlb\/player\/tyler-gough\/\" title=\"Tyler Gough\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"111339\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Gough<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=gough-000tyl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle\u2019s ninth-round draft pick<\/a> in 2022, to Los Angeles. Gough signed for a $275,000 bonus out of JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, California, passing up a recruitment by Oregon State. <\/p>\n<p>He was rated as the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.fangraphs.com\/seattle-mariners-top-29-prospects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Seattle No. 25 prospect<\/a> by Fangraphs this year, though Gough has not yet pitched above the Single-A level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis stuff is good, and he has the repertoire to be developed as a starter to see if his control improves,\u201d wrote Fangraphs talent evaluator Eric Longenhagen of the then-Mariners prospect. \u201cGough\u2019s fastball has big riding life, his changeup has plus sinking action, and his slider flashes big two-planed length.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/los-angeles-dodgers\/mookie-betts-benched\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Dodgers-Mookie-Betts-Decision-Dave-Roberts.jpg\" width=\"242\" height=\"161\" class=\"size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/author\/jonathan-vankin-ejjyr\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Vankin<\/a> JONATHAN VANKIN is an award-winning journalist and writer who now covers baseball and other sports for Heavy.com.
