{"id":293793,"date":"2025-11-19T01:16:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T01:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/293793\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T01:16:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T01:16:08","slug":"oa-complaint-another-pharmacy-offering-dry-eye-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/293793\/","title":{"rendered":"OA complaint: Another pharmacy offering dry eye services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Optometry Australia (OA) has lodged a complaint with health care bodies after a member noticed a local pharmacy advertising dry eye disease diagnosis and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.optometry.org.au\/patient_care_management\/dry-eye-in-pharmacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">OA said<\/a> the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye fell outside the scope of pharmacy practice and it \u201cstrongly opposes\u201d the offer of these services by pharmacy \u201ctechnicians\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It said the indiscriminate use of device-based dry eye (DED) therapies posed a \u201csignificant risk to patient safety and exacerbation of underlying conditions if inappropriately or improperly administered\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe eyecare practitioners are best placed to deliver the assessment and longitudinal care required for successful DED therapy, by tailoring therapy to the disease subtype before following evidence-based guidelines for therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This latest action follows concerns raised in mid-2024, when OA members reported a similar service operating in a Victorian pharmacy.<\/p>\n<p>After complaints were lodged this service is no longer operating.<\/p>\n<p>OA encouraged its members to keep an eye out for other services being offered in inappropriate settings, and to pass on their concerns if they did come across them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Optometry Australia (OA) has lodged a complaint with health care bodies after a member noticed a local pharmacy&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":61126,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[34],"tags":[64,63,137,500],"class_list":{"0":"post-293793","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-healthcare","8":"tag-au","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-health","11":"tag-healthcare"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/293793","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=293793"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/293793\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/61126"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=293793"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=293793"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=293793"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
