And it has several unusual behaviours, including a preference not to fly when chased or attacked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Do you have a story? That\u2019s because of another interesting quirk \u2014 females are polyandrous, meaning they attract a harem of males.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s an evolutionary tactic in an environment that can be tough to survive in. If females can produce lots of eggs with different males, they can have a high reproductive output,\u201d Hartnett explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIn a lot of other species, you\u2019ll have a polygynous system where the males will mate with multiple females, but the plains wanderers have turned that on its head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It&#8217;s hoped the sudden presence of the males will attract females into unoccupied paddocks that suit their needs, and they\u2019ll establish their own new territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Then, in the right conditions, she might mate with three or four males over a season. Source: Zoos Victoria<\/p>\n<p>Perfect storm of threats leads to rapid decline of plains wanderers<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Once widespread from Queensland, through NSW and down to South Australia and Victoria, this quail-sized species is now listed as critically endangered, and as few as 1,000 survive in the wild.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Captive breeding to help restore the species began at <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/tiny-creature-that-almost-vanished-in-the-1990s-secretly-released-in-aussie-national-park-021311013.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Taronga Conservation Society;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Taronga Conservation Society<\/a> in NSW back in 2015 after the species was listed as critically endangered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Werribee Zoo in Victoria then joined the program in 2017, raising around 60 chicks, the majority of which survived until adulthood.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Zoo staff walking through a field to release plains wanderers in Victoria's north.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/5af86a00-c42c-11f0-bee7-7189592994b6.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Less than one per cent of the species&#8217; natural habitat survives in Victoria, but it has adapted in some places to well-managed pasture. Source: Zoos Victoria<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The species is naturally preyed upon by eagles and hawks, but since colonisation, threats have dramatically increased, resulting in an 85 per cent decline in just the last few decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In Victoria, less than 1 per cent of the plains wanderer\u2019s original grassland range remains, with the majority converted for agriculture or bulldozed for housing developments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Like the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/rare-aussie-animal-you-can-only-see-at-one-zoo-065941598.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Victorian grassland earless dragon;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Victorian grassland earless dragon<\/a>, which the zoo is also breeding, some have adapted well to paddocks used for well-managed grazing, because livestock keeps the weeds and other introduced grass species low.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But similar to the<a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/urgent-reminder-after-sad-discovery-in-aussie-car-park-highlights-common-issue-213231120.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:bush stone-curlew;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> bush stone-curlew<\/a>, the plains wanderer\u2019s best defence is to simply lie flat on the ground and hope to remain camouflaged.
