Former world champion Tim Tszyu will make his long-awaited homecoming next month when he takes on undefeated American Anthony Velasquez in a make-or-break encounter in Sydney.<\/p>\n

After three world title defeats in his past four fights, Tszyu’s career is very much at a crossroad.<\/p>\n

Another loss would be catastrophic for his international reputation.<\/p>\n

But after dumping long-time trainer Igor Golubev and manager Glen Jennings in a huge shake-up, Tszyu is eager to showcase his qualities after training in Miami under the highly respected Pedro Diaz.<\/p>\n

Tszyu enters the high-stakes bout after a turbulent 18-month stretch that included twin defeats to Sebastian Fundora either side of a battering from Bakhram Murtazaliev in Florida last October.<\/p>\n

“December 17 is my chance to get back on track,” he said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

“The past 18 months have tested me and humbled me, but coming home for this fight in Sydney has given me a new sense of clarity and purpose.<\/p>\n

“The Tszyu family has never lost on Australian soil and that legacy means everything to me.<\/p>\n

“I’m not the same fighter, despite what critics may say. I’m sharper, hungrier, and more driven because of what I’ve gone through.”<\/p>\n

Tszyu is once again throwing his career on the line against Velasquez, a dangerous knockout artist and unbeaten in 19 professional fights, including 15 knockouts.<\/p>\n

Known for his counter-punching and raw power, Velasquez represents a significant threat as Tszyu looks to re-establish himself as a world level contender.<\/p>\n

“Tim Tszyu has never taken the easy road. Not once,” said No Limit Boxing boss George Rose.<\/p>\n

“And he is not starting now. He is walking straight back into Sydney after three long years and choosing a dangerous American knockout artist who can switch your lights off with one shot.<\/p>\n

“That tells you everything about the man.”<\/p>\n

The bout marks Tszyu’s first fight in Sydney in almost three years and his first appearance at the ICC Sydney Theatre, where his rise began in 2019.<\/p>\n

“Sydney is where Tim became a star \u2014 Dwight Ritchie, Jack Brubaker, Takeshi Inoue and his crowning moment \u2014 Tony Harrison for the WBO world title,” Rose said.<\/p>\n

“This city has been the backdrop to some of his greatest nights and now he is coming home to add another chapter.”<\/p>\n

Tszyu most recently fought in Sydney in March 2023, when he defeated Tony Harrison to claim the WBO interim super welterweight title.<\/p>\n

While respectful of Tszyu, Velasquez is intent on shattering the 31-year-old’s unbeaten record in Australia.<\/p>\n

“I’ve seen a couple of his fights,” Velasquez said.<\/p>\n

“He’s had a great career so far but I’m coming to Australia to win.<\/p>\n

“I believe in myself, I believe in my skills, I believe in my ability and I believe I’m going to win this fight.<\/p>\n

“I think I can win in multiple ways, so I’m going to just fight my fight and however it plays out, it’s just win.”<\/p>\n

The event will also feature two of Australia’s brightest talents, with the likes of former world title challenger Sam Goodman and amateur star Callum Peters, on a strong undercard including two more Australian title fights.<\/p>\n
