You can’t change history, I hope Eli and his family are okay, and a speedy recovery.

Eliesa Katoa has been ruled out for the 2026 NRL season.Source: Getty Images

“But Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo need to make sure this never happens again. If it is sanctions, if it is a thorough investigation. I would like to see someone come out publicly and explain the situation.

“Because we have mums and dads and family members who love our game, they go off and play junior rugby league every weekend.

“I don’t think we can let this one slip through… it needs to be researched, investigated and there needs to be something delivered publicly around why this will never happen again.”

Legendary enforcer Steve Roach also delivered a blunt verdict on the situation.

“And someone’s head is going to roll,” Roach said, to which Cronk replied: “Unfortunately, yes”.

The NRL introduced concussion guidelines in 2014, which has evolved to the current system which sees players stood down for 11 days after suffering a head knock.

Overall, the attitudes towards concussion across the game have also changed — but still, Cronk believes Katoa is a case study in the potential gaps in the system.

“It’s hard for Blocker and I to relay our set-up when we were playing, because there weren’t the protective systems in place,” Cronk said.

“The way the game is protected today, that never should have happened. It’s as simple as that, someone should be responsible, something should come of it.

Will Payne Haas leave the Broncos? | 06:40

“I would encourage Peter and Andrew to find out exactly what happened and make sure it never happens again.

“How many times do we see a player have a concussion, and an opposition player stops play, picks them up and makes sure they’re okay.

“So that culture has changed significantly in a much better way, this just cannot from a procedure point of view, it can’t happen.”

Roach echoed Cronk’s opinion, revealing how the attitude regarding head knocks has shifted since his playing days.

“I’m glad it’s changed, it used to be if you had a bad head cut or a bad knock it was a badge of honour to stay out there,” Roach said.

“I’m glad that’s changed because there is a lot of blokes struggling at the moment.”

Will Zac Lomax join the rival R360 comp? | 05:57

MORE NRL NEWS

NOV 1 LIVE: Origin star set for Cowboys exit; Raiders poach another Broncos gun

SOUTHS’ STATE OF PLAY: Enforcer’s exit fears amid fairytale reunion roster fix

‘WON’T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT’: Twist as Lomax, Paps’ agent pulls out

Elsewhere, Storm chief executive Justin Rodski refused to confirm whether the club will launch legal action against individuals found to be responsible for the situation.

“It’s way too early to even consider that to be honest,” Rodski told SEN radio.

“That’s something that I’m not even going to speculate on at this point in time.

“Until all the information is in front of us, I don’t think it’s fair on anyone to speculate on that, other than to say that we’ll await the findings of the investigation and that will give a clear picture to what took place.

“For us it’s about Eli’s health and what we can ensure we can replace him on our list for 2026 and ensuring we’re not disadvantaged in any way by that.”

Rodski also said he was yet to read the NRL’s findings, having launched an investigation into the matter which is yet to be made public.

“No I haven’t (seen the report).
