{"id":295761,"date":"2025-11-19T22:51:13","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T22:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/295761\/"},"modified":"2025-11-19T22:51:13","modified_gmt":"2025-11-19T22:51:13","slug":"the-moon-is-farther-from-earth-tonight-than-it-will-be-until-2043","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/295761\/","title":{"rendered":"The moon is farther from Earth tonight than it will be until 2043"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"afccc744-7fb4-46d1-9e84-5a30c6d6053c\">The sun&#8217;s gravity will pull the moon farther away from Earth than it&#8217;s been in over five years on Nov. 19, though it&#8217;ll be impossible for you to witness the lunar milestone for yourself with the naked eye in Earth&#8217;s sky.<\/p>\n<p>Each new lunar orbit is subtly different from the last, thanks in part to the overbearing <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/classical-gravity.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/classical-gravity.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gravitational influence<\/a> of the sun, which tugs at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>, forcing it to take an elliptical path around our planet that would appear as a slightly squashed circle if viewed from above. As a result, the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18145-how-far-is-the-moon.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18145-how-far-is-the-moon.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth-moon distance<\/a> is in a constant state of constant flux, shifting closer or farther away depending on where it is in its 27-day recurring orbit.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"afccc744-7fb4-46d1-9e84-5a30c6d6053c-2\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\">The most distant point in the lunar orbit is known as apogee, while the closest is known to astronomers as perigee. The most exceptional distances occur when the moon, Earth and sun are aligned during a new moon phase. A range of other factors such as the distance between <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> and Earth, or the proximity between a given moon phase and lunar apogee can combine to give rise to a particularly distant moon, known as a &#8220;micromoon.&#8221; During a new moon phase, Earth&#8217;s natural satellite appears in the daytime sky alongside the sun, so it&#8217;ll be impossible to see this micromoon take to the skies with your own eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Best picks for you<\/p>\n<p id=\"a46e8f28-dca8-469a-9deb-e4d56928331e\">In November 2025, these factors will give rise to an especially remote micromoon, the likes of which won&#8217;t be experienced again until the year 2043, according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/news\/astronomy\/farthest-moon-until-2043\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.timeanddate.com\/news\/astronomy\/farthest-moon-until-2043\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TimeandDate<\/a>. The moon will reach its most distant point at 9:46 p.m. ET on Nov. 19, (0246 GMT on Nov. 20) when it will be roughly 247,700 miles (398,600 km) from Western Australia \u2014 the closest region of Earth&#8217;s moon-facing surface at that time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"vanilla-image-block\" style=\"padding-top:53.82%;\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Gm3WzK3C3JgFzYicpk8jT9.jpg\" alt=\"A close up of the night sky with labeled stars like Algol.
