Terrence Duddy, 69, was driving a BMW SUV and cut across the oncoming lane and into a cyclist who had right of way. The cyclist, in her fifties, was seriously injured.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Sharing video footage of the collision, Thames Valley Police said: &#8220;Last Thursday, Mr Duddy, of Nightingales Lane, Chalfont St Giles, received an 8-month custodial sentence that is suspended for 18 months, 200 hours of unpaid work to be completed, costs totalling \u00a3272 and an 18-month driving disqualification.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/motorcyclist-punched-world-naked-bike-rider-avoids-jail-316805\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;\u00a0Man who considered World Naked Bike Ride cyclist a &#8220;pervert&#8221;, punched him off bike and attacked police officers spared prison sentence<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Duddy, a former boss of Argos and Homebase&#8217;s\u00a0parent company,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2013\/sep\/04\/terry-duddy-steps-down-argos-home-retail-group\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">is credited with<\/a> &#8216;inventing&#8217; click and collect catalogue ordering. He stepped down as Chief Executive in 2013 amid growing scrutiny of his \u00a31.6 million salary.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, he chaired the board of welfare charity Catch 22 and London Marathon Events, the latter being the organiser of the RideLondon sportive that last took place in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>He was described as bringing &#8220;a wealth of governance and leadership experience across both the charity and commercial sectors, along with a strong commitment to supporting children and young people&#8221; at the time of his announcement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbcchildreninneed.co.uk\/2025\/10\/bbc-children-in-need-announces-changes-to-leadership\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">His appointment<\/a> as\u00a0chair of BBC Children in Need was\u00a0announced 11 days ago by which time\u00a0Duddy would have already received his court date, raising questions as to the scrutiny that went into the charity&#8217;s appointment. He was due to join the Board of Trustees on Friday and would have led the process for appointing a new chief executive of the charity.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/terry-duddy-bw3.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"lazyload\" itemprop=\"image\" width=\"970\" height=\"1074\" alt=\"Terry Duddy (Children in need)\" title=\"Terry Duddy (Children in need)\"\/>Terry Duddy (Children in need) (credit: BBC Children in Need)<\/p>\n<p>His resignation was confirmed to staff this morning, just days after this year&#8217;s telethon fundraising appeal which raised \u00a345.5 million. The charity&#8217;s outgoing chief executive Simon Antrobus said in a statement: \u201cI recognise this will be a surprise but I want to reassure you all that we remain in a strong and stable position, and we remain focused on helping children and young people thrive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Catch 22 told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilsociety.co.uk\/news\/children-in-need-chair-resigns-after-careless-driving-conviction.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Civil Society<\/a>\u00a0they were \u201cassessing what this means for his role as a matter of urgency\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/taxi-driver-paralysed-cyclist-after-jumping-red-light-316563\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;\u00a0Taxi driver who left cyclist paralysed after jumping red light avoids jail<\/a><\/p>\n<p>BBC Children in Need told road.cc that it did not know about\u00a0Duddy&#8217;s\u00a0legal troubles prior to his appointment.<\/p>\n<p>The charity\u00a0said: &#8220;On\u00a0Tuesday 18 November, our new Chair Terry Duddy informed us that he had been convicted last week of causing\u00a0serious injury\u00a0through careless driving.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In light of\u00a0this he offered his resignation, which the board accepted, agreeing he could not continue in this role.\u00a0James Fairclough, a Trustee since 2021, has been formally appointed Chair with immediate effect.
