Yes, that\u2019s the sale price with fees for Gustav Klimt\u2019s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer (1914\u201316) which sold on Tuesday night at Sotheby\u2019s on a $150 million estimate. The Klimt broke the record for the highest price of any work of modern art sold at auction, a record previously held by Pablo Picasso\u2019s 1955 Les Femmes d\u2019Alger (\u201cVersion O\u201d), which sold at Christie\u2019s New York in 2015 for $179.4 million. One recipient of their ire last year was the dealer David Zwirner, whose New York gallery sold rare works by af Klint to Glenstone, a private museum outside Washington, D.C., and faced no small degree of pushback for it. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2025\/11\/24\/the-strange-afterlife-of-hilma-af-klint-paintings-posthumous-star\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Yorker<\/a> story this week about af Klint\u2019s afterlife provides insight into Zwirner\u2019s strained relationship with certain members of the af Klint family who undid a deal that would\u2019ve seen his gallery represent the estate of late Swedish artist.
