\n\tAs if Eddie Murphy<\/a> wasn\u2019t already synonymous with iconic franchises, the veteran comic and actor confirmed today that he\u2019d soon be taking on the famed role of Inspector Clouseau in a new Pink Panther<\/a> movie. Deadline was first to report he was circling the role in 2023.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to Today\u2018s Al Roker<\/a>, Murphy said he had initially \u201cplanned on slowing down, and things just happened\u201d with regard to his slate of upcoming projects.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m getting ready to do a [biopic of] George Clinton, [his music collective] Parliament-Funkadelic. I\u2019m getting ready to do George Clinton,\u201d The Pickup star said, confirming Deadline\u2019s scoop<\/a> last year. \u201cI\u2019ve already started Shrek 5<\/a>. And I\u2019m going to be \u2014 I\u2019m Inspector Clouseau in the next Pink Panther.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhen Roker reacted with surprise, asking if the canonically French character would still be written as such with Murphy occupying the role, the Saturday Night Live alum responded coyly: \u201cMaybe. Well, he has to be French, but he could also be Haitian. I will tell you, he\u2019s Black. He\u2019s Black, for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPeter Sellers first originated the role of Inspector James Clouseau in 1963\u2019s The Pink Panther, directed by Blake Edwards, an Italian and U.S. co-production about an inept detective who must stop a notorious jewel thief aiming to steal the precious Pink Panther diamond. The farcical character is a parody of Agatha Christie\u2019s Hercule Poirot, and has been portrayed in various sequels by Alan Arkin, Roger Moore and, most recently, Steve Martin in the 2006 reboot and subsequent 2009 sequel.
