The VLT consists of four 27-foot (8.2-meter) telescopes that can work together as a single system through the VLTI, combining their light to achieve the resolving power of a much larger telescope. Berdeu)<a id=\"elk-4ea5f98e-f0cf-42ba-97b1-a0d90d63dd91\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/>Why is it amazing?<a id=\"elk-seasonal\" class=\"paywall\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"aff6cc88-2fa9-4bca-9789-710d15528be3-0\">The four beams produced bright artificial \u201cstars,&#8221; which act as guides to help astronomers correct for the distortions caused by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth\u2019s atmosphere<\/a>, a process called <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/teles-instr\/technology\/adaptive_optics\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/teles-instr\/technology\/adaptive_optics\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">adaptive optics.<\/a> By removing this natural blur, the VLTI can produce much sharper and more detailed images.<\/p>\n<p>The team was focusing on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/hubble-space-telescope\/hubble-spots-stars-forming-in-the-tarantula-nebula-space-photo-of-the-day-for-aug-12-2025\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astronomy\/hubble-space-telescope\/hubble-spots-stars-forming-in-the-tarantula-nebula-space-photo-of-the-day-for-aug-12-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tarantula Nebula,<\/a> located in the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25450-large-magellanic-cloud.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/25450-large-magellanic-cloud.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Large Magellanic Cloud<\/a>, a satellite galaxy of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19915-milky-way-galaxy.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Milky Way<\/a> about 160,000 light-years away. The nebula is a cosmic nursery where some of the most massive and luminous stars known are born, making it an ideal target for testing the improved precision and sensitivity of the GRAVITY+ system.
