The Syracuse women’s basketball team takes its 4-0 record on the road to the Ivesco QQQ Women’s Showcase at the Hall of Fame Classic in Uncasville, Conn., this weekend for a pair of games against Utah (Friday, 5 p.m.) and #6 Michigan (Sunday, noon). The Orange have dominated their early-season competition, winning by an average margin of 29.0 points per game while holding opponents to just 49.0 points per contest. Syracuse’s defense has been suffocating, ranking third in the ACC in scoring defense and forcing 24.5 turnovers per game, which is second in the conference and 29th nationally. \n<\/p>\n
Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack<\/a>‘s squad showcased its defensive prowess most dramatically in Sunday’s 78-29 demolition of Wagner, marking the first time Syracuse has held an opponent under 30 points since 2014. The 49-point victory margin represented the largest in the Legette-Jack era at Syracuse.<\/p>\n Syracuse enters the weekend with three players averaging double figures in scoring. Senior guard Laila Phelia<\/a> and graduate student Dominique Darius<\/a> are tied for the team lead at 13.0 points per game, while freshman center Uche Izoje<\/a> is contributing 11.8 points on an impressive 67.7% shooting from the field.<\/p>\n Phelia, a transfer from Texas and former All-Big Ten selection at Michigan, has been particularly efficient, shooting 48.6% from the field and 86.7% from the free-throw line. Her 22-point outburst against Canisius on November 11 demonstrated the scoring punch she brings to the Orange backcourt.<\/p>\n Darius, who brings Pac-12 experience from UCLA and USC, has been a revelation in her first season with Syracuse. She erupted for a career-high 21 points against Canisius while leading the team with 2.75 steals per game, providing a two-way presence that has energized the Orange lineup.<\/p>\n
