(Reuters: Benoit Tessier)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Indeed, Bitcoin moved further into bear market territory overnight, plunging a further 5 per cent to under $US88,000 ($136,000) \u2014 down roughly 28 per cent from its all-time high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">IG market analyst Tony Sycamore recently questioned whether Bitcoin was the &#8220;canary in the coal mine&#8221; for overall sentiment in global financial markets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Jamieson leans towards a number of forces coming together to produce an anxious market environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Isolating the cause is difficult,&#8221; Mr Jamieson said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Is it narrow risk leadership around AI? (AFP: Kazuhiro Nogi)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">US Treasury bonds have also been viewed by those holding cheaply borrowed yen as an attractive place to earn a return of anywhere between 3 and 4 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Indeed, there&#8217;s almost $US1.1 trillion ($1.7 trillion) invested by Japan alone in the US bond market.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-10-21\/japan-first-female-pm-sanae-takaichi\/105911682\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan&#8217;s first female PM<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">In the world of male-dominated politics, Sanae Takaichi has broken through an incredibly tough glass ceiling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The Japanese yields are now at levels where Japanese investors prefer bringing their money back to Japan,&#8221; Swissquote Bank senior analyst Ipek Ozkardeskaya recently wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Overnight, the 10-year Japanese government bond yield hit its highest point since the onset of the global financial crisis in 2008.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Investors are concerned that the new Japanese Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, will overspend in her soon-to-be announced budget.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">That would require a larger-than-expected sale of Japanese government bonds to fund the spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">As bonds are sold, the prices of those bonds drop and the interest rate \u2014 or yield \u2014 increases.<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">These investments then become more attractive to say, for example, Wall Street traders who are concerned about the US stock market heading south or Japanese investors currently holding investments in US Treasury bonds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;The 10-year Japanese government bond yield surpassed levels where borrowing yen and placing it in US Treasuries makes no money after taking FX hedging costs into account,&#8221; Ms Ozkardeskaya said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;As a result, the Japanese pension funds are reportedly pulling $1.1 trillion out of the US Treasuries right now \u2014 meaning that one of the biggest Treasury buyers is turning into a net seller.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;In plain English, the [Japanese] may be pulling the rug from under the US Treasury market \u2014 that also affects riskier investments like tech, EM stocks and crypto.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So maybe we will simply blame the Japanese if the Bank of Japan [BoJ] dares hiking rates come December \u2026 and that Santa remains stuck somewhere where there&#8217;s still snow this Xmas,&#8221; she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Iceberg ahead<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A hand holding a $100 note next to a wallet\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/212bd23c8a0b5742a8b73d84df8c3927\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Older investors will be nervously checking their superannuation balances as markets dip.
