The Greater Glider Project<\/p>\n<p>Century-old trees critical to greater gliders<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hollows in trees do not start forming until a tree reaches around 100 years of age, and they are used by greater gliders as dens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Successfully verifying a hollow is <a data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/29-charges-laid-after-endangered-species-found-dead-near-australian-worksite-070857836.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:lived in by a greater glider;cpos:3;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lived in by a greater glider <\/a>usually requires entering the forest at night, when the nocturnal species is active, and seeing it in use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although the <a data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/residents-on-the-hook-as-environmental-agency-fined-360000-for-chopping-down-trees-035532607.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Forestry Corporation;cpos:4;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forestry Corporation<\/a>, a business owned by the NSW Government, surveys forests for gliders before they begin work, in line with state regulations, NREGP isn&#8217;t confident in the business&#8217;s ability to locate their dens before trees are felled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The group&#8217;s volunteers have documented the dens of 20 greater gliders since July at the edges of a 1,236-hectare compartment of Ewingar, but a 2024 survey of the same area by Forestry Corporation found just three.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NREGP&#8217;s Jessica Sommers has called for an emergency pause on logging in areas of Ewingar State Forest where the gliders live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Greater gliders are very particular about where they sleep and nest,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOnce you take their habitat away, they die, so logging this forest is a really permanent end to these creatures. Source: Wilderness Australia<\/p>\n<p>International environment group releases new glider data<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">NREGP&#8217;s concerns about the state&#8217;s greater glider surveys are shared by World Wide Fund for Nature-Australia (WWF-Australia), <a data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/50-night-search-in-aussie-forest-uncovers-worrying-find-good-chance-theyll-die-032144734.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:a critic of Forestry Corporation&#039;s activities;cpos:5;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a critic of Forestry Corporation&#8217;s activities<\/a> in the species&#8217; habitat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It released data on Friday, highlighting discrepancies between monitoring by conservation volunteers versus Forestry Corporation contractors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Across seven state forests in NSW, Forestry Corporation found 42 den trees while volunteers found 918, which is more than 20 times as many.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Identifying these hollows is important because, under state regulations, a 50-metre radius logging exclusion zone must be set up around them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Sightings of greater gliders moving along branches are also recorded, but they are less significant because they only prompt 25 metres of protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The adequacy of both is disputed, with research funded by WWF-Australia indicating <a data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/controversial-rule-could-be-stressing-endangered-greater-gliders-061203306.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJ61EOZv_JRTUInuL3rsekDmUJVdyP6vt7IiV2HDJEjaXx5A0OEA-hwJfQ7nGmLVZCXviwOBPh9TPdg8ZBZRC5A4_zU5k_s7kBOOAGdNDR40IhfCXpSLwswPjhEtDRYm5UOLTbZRmKIrCZe8mArESOEJYWfwyvHq7MZU5BqdhTq_\" data-ylk=\"slk:a minimum of 80 metres;cpos:6;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a minimum of 80 metres<\/a> is required.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"WWF-Australia has released data indicating volunteer surveys of forests have found significantly more greater glider dens than Forestry Corporation. Source: WWF-Australia<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Forestry Corporation told Yahoo News it had made a total of 600 greater glider sightings and den identifications across the seven state parks in question, Brother, Styx, Enfield, Tuggolo, Tallaganda, Badja and Glenbog.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Forestry Corporation has protected over 16,000 Greater Glider trees and hollow-bearing trees since January 2024,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">But Dr Kita Ashman, a conservation scientist at WWF-Australia, has described the Forestry Corporation&#8217;s efforts to monitor for greater gliders as an \u201cepic failure\u201d and called for the scrapping of federal regulations that allow state governments to log threatened species&#8217; habitat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cIt\u2019s time to close deforestation loopholes, provide stronger upfront protections for nature, establish an independent environmental regulator, and safeguard nature against climate change,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Government company completes &#8216;detailed&#8217; plans before logging<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Responding to questions about Ewingar State Forest, Forestry Corporation said it spends months completing \u201cdetailed\u201d planning and surveys before it begins harvesting a forest in line with regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201c[There are] specific conditions to protect greater glider habitat across the landscape by limiting operations to a proportion of the forested area and retaining large numbers of trees for glider habitat and food sources\u2026 Forestry Corporation is operating in line with these strict regulations,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"A greater glider in a tree at Ewingar State Forest.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/a32b3730-c67f-11f0-a5fd-d603bcdd9cf6.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Greater gliders can vary in colour. Source: The Endangered Gliders Project<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It confirmed roadworks in the forest were undertaken for multiple reasons, including timber harvesting, forest management, and community access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although it hasn\u2019t released a date to start operations in this area, it confirmed harvesting is underway elsewhere in the forest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cEwingar State Forest has been harvested and regrown in the past and the area currently being harvested will be regrown again, once operations are complete,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Greater glider feud escalates in remote forest<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Few Australians are familiar with greater gliders, a large marsupial, which can jump between trees and weigh up to 1,700 grams.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Although they\u2019re listed as endangered, when it comes to their protection, many conservationists don\u2019t believe they receive the same <a data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\" href=\"https:\/\/au.news.yahoo.com\/boundary-lines-drawn-for-476000-hectare-great-koala-national-park-grandchildren-will-see-them-140117385.html?guccounter=1\" data-ylk=\"slk:special treatment as koalas by state governments.;cpos:7;pos:1;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">special treatment as koalas by state governments.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Around 165km south at Styx River State Forest, one volunteer glider surveyer locked himself onto timber harvesting machinery to express \u201cfrustration\u201d at the destruction of greater glider habitat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI am putting myself on the line because I just can\u2019t stand by and watch endangered species habitat being destroyed,\u201d Micah Weekes said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Susie Russel from the North East Forest Alliance said the system designed to protect greater gliders is not working.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cTime is running out to find more of their homes.
