This indicates a 3.4% increase compared with 2023 (\u20ac123 675 million) and a 59.5% increase compared with 2014 (\u20ac80 175 million).<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">This information comes from data on <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/science-technology-innovation\/database?node_code=gba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">government budget allocations for R&amp;D<\/a> (GBARD) published by Eurostat today. The article presents a handful of findings from the more detailed <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Government_budget_allocations_for_R%26D_(GBARD)\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Statistics Explained article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">In 2024, government budget allocations for R&amp;D at the EU level stood at \u20ac284.7 per person, a 57.0% increase compared with 2014 (\u20ac181.3 per person).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">The highest allocations among EU countries were recorded in Luxembourg (\u20ac759.2 per person), followed at some distance by Denmark (\u20ac586.8) and the Netherlands (\u20ac542.7). On the other hand, the lowest R&amp;D budget allocations per person were in Romania (\u20ac19.1 per person), Bulgaria (\u20ac38.3) and Hungary (\u20ac58.7). The largest percentage increases were recorded in Latvia (+313%, from \u20ac19.1 per person in 2014 to \u20ac78.9 in 2024), Slovenia (+252%, from \u20ac78.3 to \u20ac275) and Lithuania (+197% from \u20ac42.7 to \u20ac123).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than a third of R&amp;D budget goes to general university funds<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">In terms of distribution by socioeconomic objectives, 35.7% of the GBARD was directed to the general advancement of knowledge, primarily financed by a public block grant known as <a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=Glossary:Public_general_university_funds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public general university funds<\/a> (GUF), used by public higher education institutions to support their activities. Additionally, 16.6% of the GBARD was dedicated to the general advancement of knowledge from sources other than GUF, 9.4% to industrial production and technology, 7.0% to health, and 6.1% to exploration and exploitation of space.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center\"><a class=\"ecl-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/23848f76-231e-7bd4-3f83-3523a09598d1\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Distribution of government budget allocations for R&amp;D, 2024 (%).
