Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, a once-loyal supporter of US President Donald Trump who has become a critic, has announced she is resigning from Congress in January.<\/p>\n
Ms Greene made the announcement via a 10-minute video posted to social media platform X.<\/p>\n
“I’ve always represented the common American man and woman as a member of the House of Representatives, which is why I’ve always been despised in Washington DC and just never fit in,” she said.<\/p>\n
Ms Greene’s resignation followed a public falling out with Mr Trump in recent months, as the congresswoman criticised him for his stance on files related to Jeffrey Epstein, along with foreign policy and health care.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump branded her a “traitor” and “wacky” and said he would endorse a challenger against her when she ran for re-election next year.<\/p>\n
“Standing up for American women who were raped at 14-years-old, trafficked and used by rich powerful men, should not result in me being called a ‘traitor’ and threatened by the president of the United States \u2014 whom I fought for,” she said.<\/p>\n
Neither the White House nor Mr Trump made immediate comment.<\/p>\n
Ms Greene had been closely tied to the Republican president since she launched her political career in 2020.<\/p>\n
In her video, she underscored her longtime loyalty to Mr Trump, except on a few issues, and said it was “unfair and wrong” that he had attacked her for disagreeing.<\/p>\n
“Loyalty should be a two-way street and we should be able to vote our conscience and represent our district’s interest, because our job title is literally ‘representative’,” she said.<\/p>\n
