Allan Moffat has been remembered as an icon and pioneer of Australian motorsport after the four-time Bathurst champion died on Saturday morning aged 86.<\/p>\n
Moffat died surrounded by loved ones after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.<\/p>\n
One of the greats of Australian racing, the Canadian-born driver won the Touring Car Championships four times between 1973 and 1983.<\/p>\n

The Supercars and Sport Australia Hall of Famer then stayed on in the sport in team management after his 1989 retirement, also moving into commentary.<\/p>\n
“Allan was a pioneer, a champion and an icon whose impact on our sport is impossible to measure,” said Supercars CEO James Warburton.<\/p>\n
“His record speaks for itself.<\/p>\n
“He was a dominant force during one of the most competitive eras in touring car racing and his legendary rivalry \u2014 and friendship \u2014 with Peter Brock defined a generation.<\/p>\n
“But Allan’s legacy reaches far beyond the racetrack.<\/p>\n
“He brought a new level of professionalism to the sport, transforming the role of sponsorship and team management in ways that shaped the modern era of Supercars. His influence can still be felt in the paddock today.<\/p>\n
“Allan Moffat was one of the greatest we will ever see. He will be deeply missed.”<\/p>\n
Born in Canada, Moffat moved to Australia at age 17.<\/p>\n
A Bathurst champion in 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1977, Moffat was the face of Ford in Australia for close to a decade as he took on Brock on the mountain.<\/p>\n
