{"id":301205,"date":"2025-11-22T09:56:08","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T09:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/301205\/"},"modified":"2025-11-22T09:56:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T09:56:08","slug":"beatles-anthology-addition-is-an-exceptional-trove-of-outtakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/301205\/","title":{"rendered":"Beatles &#8216;Anthology&#8217; addition is an exceptional trove of outtakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"position:absolute;top:0;left:0;right:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;z-index:2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/86460064007-trnd-helen-mirren-performs-beatles-lyrics-thumb.jpg\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"vidplayicon\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/appservices\/universal-web\/universal\/icons\/icon-play-alt-white.svg\" alt=\"play\" style=\"height:40px;margin:auto 18px auto 27px;width:40px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>See Helen Mirren (dramatically) read Beatles lyrics<\/p>\n<p>Helen Mirren opened Stella McCartney\u2019s runway show at Paris Fashion Week with a dramatic spoken-word rendition of The Beatles\u2019 \u201cCome Together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2025\/04\/08\/beatles-book-john-lennon-paul-mccartney-reveals\/82979029007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Beatles<\/a> reissues can feel overwhelming, but few fans would quibble with a remastered \u201cAnthology Collection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trove of outtakes, demos and live cuts originally dropped in 1995 and 1996 as a companion to the multi-part documentary series that drew nearly 30 million viewers per episode when they aired on ABC.<\/p>\n<p>The three-part \u201cAnthology\u201d audio collection also unveiled the first two \u201cnew\u201d Beatles songs \u2013 \u201cFree As A Bird\u201d and \u201cReal Love\u201d \u2013 since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/12\/08\/who-killed-john-lennon\/71817101007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">John Lennon\u2019s death,<\/a> prompting a frenzy among Beatles fanatics.<\/p>\n<p>That collection has been given an extensive refresh as well as an expansion with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2025\/08\/21\/the-beatles-anthology-documentary-music-book\/85742991007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">36-track \u201cAnthology 4\u201d<\/a> to complement the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2025\/11\/17\/beatles-anthology-disney-plus-first-look\/87314210007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Disney+ debut of \u201cThe Beatles Anthology\u201d documentary<\/a>, out Nov. 26 with a new Episode 9 arriving Nov. 28.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime Beatles producer and consigliere George Martin curated the original \u201cAnthology\u201d music. But for this revamp, out now on vinyl, CD and streaming, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/videos\/entertainment\/2023\/11\/09\/now-and-then-producer-shares-thoughts-on-final-beatles-track\/71520444007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Martin\u2019s son Giles<\/a> is the architect behind the various remasters and stereo processing (a subtle spread of the mono signal) for the 191-song behemoth.<\/p>\n<p>While the first three \u201cAnthology\u201d installments contain numerous tweaks that will enthrall audiophiles \u2013 a new mix of \u201cAll My Loving\u201d from \u201cThe Ed Sullivan Show,\u201d a new mix of \u201cHelp\u201d from \u201cThe Blackpool Night Out\u201d TV series and stereo processing of a home demo sequence of \u201cStrawberry Fields Forever\u201d among them \u2013 the new Volume 4, also available as a standalone addition, is an exceptional supplement.<\/p>\n<p>Giles Martin, who is the executive music producer on the upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/movies\/2025\/04\/01\/the-beatles-movies-cinemacon\/82751965007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sam Mendes-directed Beatles movies<\/a>, recently chatted with USA TODAY from the set of the films slated for 2028 about some of the previously unreleased material on \u201cAnthology 4,\u201d which also includes the ostensibly final Beatles song, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/11\/10\/giles-martin-interview-the-beatles-now-and-then-ai-paul-mccartney\/71517629007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cNow and Then,\u201d<\/a> released in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The first take of \u2018In My Life\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The stirring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/10\/09\/john-lennon-girlfriend-may-pang-lost-weekend-movie\/71115457007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Lennon composition<\/a> sounds a bit faster and with some slightly different phrasing than the final version on \u201cRubber Soul,\u201d but what struck Martin about it most was Lennon\u2019s singing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat ability, in the moment, to convey a song in the studio \u2026 it\u2019s just how good they were,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s no, \u2018let\u2019s put the drums down first.\u2019 It\u2019s a finished song (from the beginning). The rawness of that transgresses everything and you realize it\u2019s such a beautiful song and an incredibly poignant song for someone so young. And also the vision my dad had to bring out his baroque piano piece in the middle section (of the song) while the boys went for lunch!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin says that he read the words to \u201cIn My Life\u201d at his father\u2019s funeral in 2016. \u201cIt was his favorite lyric of the Beatles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A rehearsal of \u2018All You Need is Love\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The lighthearted run-through was for <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/0BzJ6374dIa9DFdKcibV0f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a BBC broadcast<\/a> that would be the first worldwide satellite broadcast, Martin says, and the pressure was vast despite the band\u2019s goofing around during this take.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad said he was panicking in the control room and there they are and even when they\u2019re joking around they\u2019re still good,\u201d Martin says. \u201cThere\u2019s that energy in it and all you have to do is put energy in the right place and you get hit records.\u201dThe band, Martin says, would frequently jest and tease when they knew something wasn\u2019t live. But when they knew it was they could turn out something \u201cincredibly iconic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like the rooftop concert in \u2018Get Back.\u2019 It\u2019s just a performance on the rooftop and it sounds like a record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An acoustic \u2018Helter Skelter\u2019?<\/p>\n<p>In the new installment of the \u201cAnthology\u201d documentary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2025\/09\/30\/paul-mccartney-concert-review-2025-palm-desert\/86430124007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Paul McCartney<\/a> briefly strums an acoustic guitar and sings some of what would become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vWW2SzoAXMo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u201cHelter Skelter,\u201d<\/a> one of The Beatles\u2019 most raucous songs.<\/p>\n<p>So is there a version of McCartney\u2019s acoustic sketches anywhere in the archives?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, there isn\u2019t. If there was, you\u2019d have heard it,\u201d Martin says. \u201cHe was noodling probably with the idea of it being loud. Paul had read somewhere that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2025\/09\/29\/the-who-farewell-tour-2025-las-vegas\/86411338007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">The Who<\/a> were the loudest band and there was a rumor that they killed fish in a pond from the loudness, like \u2018Spinal Tap,\u2019 they went to 11. So Paul was like, wait a second, we\u2019re meant to be the biggest and best and to be the loudest band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin notes that the primal guitar of \u201cHelter Skelter\u201d are much like those in \u201cRevolution\u201d as both are \u201cstill very progressive now. This was before people were into distortion.
