(Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Instead, Queensland police officers Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold and Wieambilla resident Alan Dare lost their lives in an ambush.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Dare&#8217;s widow, Kerry Dare, said she was never leaving Wieambilla, despite her husband being killed minutes from her front door.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s peaceful, it&#8217;s beautiful,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s where I decided to build my retirement and to holiday with my children and then we got stuck here during COVID and fell in love with the place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;And then he [Alan] got murdered. Where else would I be? He built my dream. (ABC Southern Qld: Brandon Long)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Queensland Coroner Terry Ryan handed down <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-21\/wieambilla-police-shooting-inquiry-findings-terror-attack\/106033342\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his findings yesterday into the murders of constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold and civilian Alan Dare<\/a>, and the subsequent shooting deaths of the trio behind the attack: Nathaniel, Gareth and Stacey Train.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Ryan said the trio each had an &#8220;undiagnosed and untreated psychotic illness&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He made <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-21\/qld-wieambilla-shooting-2022-inquest-findings-what-to-know\/106038208\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10 recommendations in total<\/a>, including several on the need for more training for Triple Zero operators, and for police to review their drone capabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a statement, Police Minister David Purdie said the Queensland government would consider all the recommendations, including boosting funding to a specialist threat assessment centre, and consider whether introducing mental health assessments for weapons licence applications was feasible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Ms Dare said the coroner&#8217;s findings had been a &#8220;big let-down&#8221;, leaving her with many questions still unanswered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t feel like [the coroner&#8217;s] done Alan justice at all. He&#8217;s the only man that could, and this is the end of it. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Meanwhile, the wider community is determined not to let the events on Wains Road that day define them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We have seen the hardest times,&#8221; said newsagent Gayle Porter in Tara, 300 kilometres west of Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We are a proud and resilient community \u2026 we have seen the best in our community, spirit, friendship and a sense of belonging.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Missing persons search<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">What should have been a routine inquiry turned deadly on December 12, 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The two constables had arrived at the Trains&#8217; Wains Rd property in Wieambilla, along with constables Randall Kirk and Keely Brough, to follow up a missing persons inquiry into Nathaniel Train.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But brothers Gareth and Nathaniel Train were lying in wait after setting up an elaborate scheme to murder the police they considered to be their enemy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Dare was also killed after checking out smoke coming from the property in the aftermath of the attack.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Alan Dare smiles at the camera.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/b509ea71d1b74de4e40a2684c1d1290b\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Alan Dare was shot and killed during an attack that ambushed police responders in the rural Queensland community of Wieambilla. (ABC Southern Queensland: Brandon Long)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But Ms Porter said the town was &#8220;sick&#8221; of the bad press from the shootings and <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-10-26\/qld-bushfires-homes-destroyed-tara-deaths-fire\/103023352\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">horrific bushfires<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the alleged killings of two police officers in another apparent ambush <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-09-06\/dezi-freeman-porepunkah-shooting-timeline-evidence\/105731142\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105731142\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in the small Victorian town of Porepunkah<\/a> three months ago launched her town back into the media spotlight unnecessarily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Every time they want do something negative about weapons licensing or there&#8217;s a shooting or something happening \u2026 they always seem to bring it back to Tara and Wieambilla,&#8221; Ms Porter said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;re pretty sick of the negative publicity and we don&#8217;t even want to hear about it anymore because it just brings back bad memories.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>December 12 is not a &#8216;defining&#8217; moment<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Warrego MP Ann Leahy said while the memory of that horrible day would never be erased, there was one thing residents were clear about.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Ann Leahy wears a pink jacket and black top. (ABC Southern Qld: Georgie Hewson)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">She said the people of Tara were focused on making their community better, and in recent times, things had been going well with wheat crops and cattle sales looking strong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I think that&#8217;s one of the things that really stands out about the people in Tara, is that they are very committed to making sure that life gets back to normal and continues as normal,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">While the rest of the country might be abuzz with the inquest&#8217;s findings, Ms Porter said her community&#8217;s resilience would always remain, no matter what life threw at them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t define us at all,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"For the people of Tara, what happened just down the road casts a long shadow.
