It makes me really hurt \u2014 as if somebody ripped your heart out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The springs are not far from the southern shores of Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre \u2013 but unlike the lake, they rely not on floodwaters but freshwater that flows underground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">They&#8217;re called mound springs because centuries of sediment has built up around their edges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Each spring has its own unique flora and fauna.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Reeds around a spring.\" waters can even bring the incongruous sight of fish thriving in the outback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Each spring carries a story that connects it to the traditional owners \u2014 the Arabana people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">But they say the environment \u2014 and their cultural connection to it \u2014 is under threat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Arabana people are now fighting mining giant BHP for compensation over what they say is damage to their cultural heritage and the loss of kuta, the Arabana world&#8217;s biggest underground freshwater reserves \u2014 which spans almost 1.7 million square kilometres.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An overhead view of a spring.\" basin lands.(ABC News: Lincoln Rothall)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Its natural pressure allows water to flow to the surface through its natural springs, or with the drilling of bores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The federal government estimates business activity in the basin \u2014 including agriculture and mining \u2014 contributed $33.2 billion to the economy last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Hydrogeologist Matthew Currell from Griffith University says in the first half of the 20th century, many bores were drilled and left to he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It meant that the pressure of the water in the [Great Artesian Basin] reduced quite substantially and quite rapidly and that meant that a lot of these incredible springs actually stopped flowing completely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Professor Currell says efforts to cap bores have seen some improvements in the basin, balancing extraction and replenishment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He says there have been signs of recovery in springs in Queensland, but the Arabana people say that&#8217;s not what they&#8217;re seeing in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>BHP and The Bubbler<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An overhead view of a BHP wellfield in outback South Australia.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/bbdec667f4cb7275dafe3835a82e7b8c\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> The BHP-owned wellfield on Arabana Country pumps water to the company\u2019s Olympic Dam mine.(ABC News: Lincoln Rothall)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Just a few kilometres away from the springs on Arabana Country is a BHP-owned wellfield \u2014 known as Wellfield A \u2014 that, according to the company, pumps more than four million litres of water per day to its Olympic Dam mine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The company takes another 29 million litres per day from another area \u2014 Wellfield B \u2014 further to the west.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Betty and Joe say the springs near Wellfield A are nothing like they were in their childhoods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At one spring \u2014 The Bubbler \u2014 they say their relatives used to play a game to show the strength of the flow.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An overhead view of an outback spring.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/986d1fc130fe96e53bd0072a5f350433\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/> Parts of outback SA rely on springs like this one.(ABC News: Lincoln Rothall)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I remember my father telling me stories about how we used to work on the railways and they used to, as a joking thing, bring say five foot of a sleeper and throw it in here and wait for a minute or so,&#8221;
