He is wearing a short sleeved shirt and is wearing a helmet with a camera attached to it.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Getty<\/p>\n<p>Sean Connery at the helm of the autogyro Little Nellie, which is reminiscent of Roald Dahl&#8217;s experience as a fighter pilot in World War Two<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The original first draft manuscript of a James Bond film has gone on display at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The screenplay of You Only Live Twice, written by the author in 1967, is on temporary loan at the museum in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">The film, based on the book by Ian Fleming, was produced by Albert Broccoli and starred Sean Connery as the British spy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Head of collections at the museum, Will Phillips, said that Dahl &#8220;was a close friend of Ian Fleming and was tasked with turning a first draft around in eight weeks&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763877190_266_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/be890f60-c559-11f0-8c06-f5d460985095.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Jan Baldwin The author Roald Dahl wearing a cardigan and shirt in his writing hut. He is surrounded by a filing cabinet and another desk which has various items on it such as a brush and a pipe.\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 hLdNfA\"\/>Jan Baldwin<\/p>\n<p>The author Roald Dahl in his writing hut in the garden of his home in Buckinghamshire, circa 1990<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">Museum director Steve Gardam said that Dahl was a fighter pilot in World War Two and was working for British intelligence in Washington when he first met Ian Fleming, who also worked in intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">He said that &#8220;they were similar characters, they were irascible, witty and caustic, and both were interested in writing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">After Ian Fleming died in 1964, producer Cubby Broccoli contacted Dahl in 1967 and asked if he could write a script in eight weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;He drew on his experience as a fighter pilot in World War II and his subsequent role in espionage, supplying intelligence from Washington to Prime Minister Winston Churchill,&#8221; said Mr Phillips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;The scene in which Bond is flying autogyro Little Nellie and under fire from four SPECTRE [a criminal organisation in the story] helicopters is hugely reminiscent of Dahl&#8217;s own experience as a fighter pilot in the Battle of Athens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-9a00e533-0 eZyhnA\">&#8220;He describes the dogfight in his autobiography Going Solo as &#8216;an endless blur of enemy fighters whizzing towards me from every side.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1763877190_266_grey-placeholder.png\" class=\"sc-5340b511-0 gUePlo hide-when-no-script\" aria-label=\"image unavailable\"\/><img decoding=\"async\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/7c3c8e70-c559-11f0-a892-01d657345866.jpg.webp.webp\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre A man with short brown hair and wearing a checked shirt holding a manuscript in his hands.
