Sunday’s 11 point win by Melbourne United moved them to a franchise best 13-2 record heading into FIBA Break.<\/p>\n
While coach Dean Vickerman is thrilled with how his team are tracking through the first half of the season.<\/p>\n
But he’s more excited that his team are finding different ways to win basketball games, like they did on Sunday at John Cain Arena.<\/p>\n
The league-leaders, who are a top three shooting side from downtown at 33.1 per cent on the season, only hit 9\/29 triples (25.71 per cent) on Sunday, including sharpshooter Chris Goulding converting just one of his 11 attempts.<\/p>\n
Instead, United scored 58 points in the paint, a dominant display compared to Perth’s 34.<\/p>\n
“We found different ways [to win],” Vickerman said in the post-game press conference.<\/p>\n
“Some nights we’ve shot 30 free throws, while this game was all about offensive rebounds and they way we scored in the paint. I believe we’ve been attacking the paint well.<\/p>\n
“It’s been a focus all year for to keep attacking the paint, as has getting fast break points, which was helped tonight by us looking after the ball and forcing 12 turnovers. I thought that was a massive advantage for us today.<\/p>\n
“We always want Tyson [Walker] and Milton [Doyle] to get their feet in the paint, while good cutters, like Dash [Daniels], contribute to that too.<\/p>\n
“[Today] was obviously probably a fraction over our average of of number of threes, [and while we didn’t hit as many as we would have liked] there’s not too many of them I would have turned down. I thought they were pretty good looks.”<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
As Vickerman touched on, United’s advantage in fast break points (25-8), points off turnovers (11-0) and second chance points (10-5) proved to be the difference in Sunday’s Round 10 clash.<\/p>\n
Heading into the FIBA Break, United is first, with a 13-2 record, while Perth (8-6) is fourth.<\/p>\n
After the break, the pair play each other once again, this time at RAC Arena on Thursday, December 4, tipping off at 9.30pm AEDT, live on ESPN.<\/p>\n
