{"id":306654,"date":"2025-11-25T00:45:10","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T00:45:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/306654\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T00:45:10","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T00:45:10","slug":"historic-pay-deal-with-uber-eats-and-doordash-could-set-minimum-pay-for-gig-economy-delivery-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/au\/306654\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic pay deal with Uber Eats and DoorDash could set minimum pay for gig economy delivery workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">A historic deal could transform Australia&#8217;s gig economy, with the country&#8217;s two largest on-demand delivery platforms agreeing to minimum pay rates and providing wide-ranging improvements and protections for riders and drivers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The agreement struck between the Transport Workers Union (TWU) and Uber Eats and DoorDash followed years of campaigning by workers and the union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Minimum safety net pay rates would put a floor beneath what have been wildly variable earnings for delivery workers, who have often taken home far less than Australia&#8217;s minimum wage under current pay arrangements, which see them paid per delivery, not for time worked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The development represents a substantial win for the TWU, which has argued the lack of minimum conditions has pushed down working standards for employees in industries beyond those it covers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Uber Eats and DoorDash have previously railed against the imposition of minimum conditions and warned it would massively increase costs for consumers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Gig workers have campaigned for years for a better industry and, for the first time in the world, there could soon be a minimum floor that represents a life-changing increase to their pay,&#8221; Michael Kaine, national secretary of the TWU, said in a joint media statement from the three parties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After constructive discussions with Uber Eats and DoorDash, this is a significant step towards a fairer gig economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The deal worked out between the union and the dominant players will now be jointly submitted to the industrial umpire, the Fair Work Commission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Some of the benefits include:<\/p>\n<p>Dispute resolution processesAccident insurance paid for by the platformsThe right to be represented by a union<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The companies welcomed the deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Delivery workers keep Australia moving, helping busy households and supporting small businesses,&#8221; said Simon Rossi, vice-president of DoorDash in the Asia Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This proposal shows we can work together to lift standards and still enable the flexibility people rely on, under the government&#8217;s new laws.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2022-06-06\/gig-workers-insecure-employment-labor-changes\/101126858\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/101126858\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federal government has made significant changes to workplaces in recent years<\/a>, including the &#8220;right to disconnect&#8221; and a positive duty to prevent sexual harassment, meaning businesses have to actively prevent, not passively react, to the issue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-11-11\/nsw-amazon-flex-workers-deliveries-drivers-sydney\/105964946\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Flex drivers battling bots and culture of fear to keep their jobs<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Tech giant Amazon claims to offer convenience to both its customers and its contractors.
